JT95
Fast answer needed, as I'm about to lay down some cash. Looking at a 99 Legacy with a bad engine and some transmission problems. 2.5 litre engine. Auto trans. I have a good 2000 2.2 litre engine and trans out of a wrecked Impreza OBS. Will this 2000 2.2 engine/trans be a direct drop-in for the 99 Legacy or are there going to be major issues at play? THANKS!!!!!
mdjdc
If the 99 has a 2.5, then you are looking at an outback and the tranny will not work unless you also swap the final drive. The 2.5 and 2.2 drivelines are different, so you would have to swap them alltogether. The other issues shouldn't be a problem though.

NO, Ive got everything that goes with the 2000 2.2, from engine and transmission to rear diff. And, yes, the car is an Outback. The guy was in the middle of repairs and need some fast cash. I've got a good 2.2 engine and transmission looking for a home. My main concern was whether or not there would me any major issues with the wiring and onbard computer. Thanks for getting back with me.
johnceggleston
if they both have a spin on trans filter it may be ok. the 99 (late) is a phase 2 trans with a different connector from 98. i do not know about the 2000 legacy trans. it should be phase 2 but i don't know. does it have an external spin on filter. in 00 or 01 legacy and outback, used the same auto trans, same part number. this was a first. if the connector is the same, i'd bet it will work, except the final drive won't match. JT95
When you guys say "final drive", you're referring to the gears in the rear diff, correct? Is it pretty straightforward to swap an Impreza rear diff into a Legacy?

There will be major issues, not a good choice for a swap. 2000 2.2 is a phase 2 engine I think, 99 legacy is phase 1, lots of differences if so. I don't think the trans will work either, not sure on that, they might have different final drive and wiring.
johnceggleston
suggestion, try swapping the tcu and ecu from one to the other to see if it will run. this is a very long shot and the eng/trans swap may work even if this doesn't. but if this experiment does work you should be ok. this of course assumes at least one of these cars does in fact run. ps, the limiting factor in going from 99 to 00 in an outback trans is the wiring, if the connector is the same that part wil probably work. JT95
Well, we'll see what happens. I'm driving up w/ a trailer to buy the car today. The guy only wants $600 for it. I figure the alloy wheels and good tires are worth $200. I've just got the 2.2 engine/trans sitting in a completely stripped car, so it might be a fun project with little cash risk involved. If it fails, I feel pretty sure I can get my $600 back by parting out the car if it comes to that or just selling it outright for $500. I need a summer project. I'll keep you posted...
