when my outback (98) is idling it has a slight studder hard to explain but every 10 seconds or so it sounds like it misses just once and then normal then again every 10 -30 seconds and not even every time??!?

Spark plugs and wires. Replace with NGK or Denso plugs and OEM(packard) or NGK wires

Ditto, new plugs and wires should correct the problem.
