August 7, 200817 yr found nice 98/99 outback with blown 2.5 (compression in radiator). I've got a good early 90's 2.2 out of an obd1 wagon. is it worth the time to swap and are the 2.5's junk if it's just a head gasket? anyone know if they are prone to cracked heads or not. thanks voodoo (orphan in an earlier incarnation )

See below. Many threads available on this. Best bet IMO is pull engine and reseal if bottom end is sound. Nothing wrong with DOHC that a correct HG install can't fix. Head warp due to high heat can cause cam siezure in time, so simply refacing heads is not indicated.
August 8, 200817 yr Many threads available on this. NO. All harness, ecu, exhaust, substantially different.. I disagree. The "early 90s 2.2" engine should bolt in, and it should also have a two port exhaust setup. If you got a complete engine wiring harness harness/intake manifold / throttle body/injectors etc. from a '95 legacy, it would bolt up to the earlier engine OK and connect to the 2.5 chassis harness fine and run with the 2.5 ecu. The only problem will be lack of EGR which will set a CEL. Having said that, a complete '95 2.2 engine assy would be the easiest way to do it and shouldn't be THAT expensive. Nathan
August 8, 200817 yr If it is just a bad HG and the 2.5 runs decent, fix the HG and drop her back in. My two cents.
August 8, 200817 yr I just did the same thing, took a 92 2.2 and a 95 intake from 2.2 and put it in my 96 obw. If you have a 98/99 you will need the duel port header/y pipe from a 96 or older. Mine does fine on power and about 25 mpg at 70 mph.

August 9, 200817 yr So it can be done. What did you do for the EGR? Do you pass emissions? I was going to drill and tap the 2.2 head but forgot to do it and just put a pipe plug on the intake side of the egr. We dont have emissions so I just put up with the CEL being on.
