No air from cabin vent grilles

Recommended Posts

Subaru Legacy 1990

The vent system (cabin fresh air supply) usually works well. But sometimes when I push the “Vent” button I hear a sound of a vent somewhere but NO air comes out of the grilles. If I drive for a while with the “Vent” button on (green on the attached photo) at some point air starts blowing out of the grilles.

What could be the reason? How can I repair it?

Thanks.

Thanks for the links.

One more thing:

How do I take out the AC control panel? - see picture

Is it bolted somehow...? It doesn't move when I try by hand.

I am still trying to figure out where that "heater door cable" is located.

Is it in the engine compartment or inside (in the cabin) under the plastic claddings...?

I will appreciate if you could refer to a photo or some good description of location of that heater door cable.

Thanks,

Stan

Well, I took out the stereo and I could barely touch the cable but there is no way to get the unit our without disconnecting it. And there is no way to disconnect that cable without dismounting all the plastic cladding under dashboard…

He was trying to get the cable out to get the heater control unit out. It's definitely the control unit. The solder joints are a common failure point.

Stan,

I'll see if I can find any info in the manuals regarding getting that heater control unit out. From what I remember, the cable shouldn't be limiting you getting it out. Did you take the stereo out? There may be screws just above it. I don't recall exactly.

Hi Josh,

Yes there are screws underneath the unit. I got the unit loose and the cable is the only thing that is dragging the unit. Now I have to figure out how to access one of the ends of the cable preferably without taking out all the plastics under dashboard...

As a matter of fact all the buttons are working right now but if I go the lazy way and put it back it might not work just when I need it in the cold rain...
