96 legacy engine replacement options

Featured Replies

I am thinking about a 96, or maybe it was a 98, Legacy Wagon that needs an engine. "It needs an engine due to oil loss" is all I know. The rest of the car looks great so it may be worth the time to replace the engine.

But what years 2.2 can be used?

I'll confirm the year to be more accurate.

96 or 98 won't matter, the swap will be the same. 95-98 EJ22's easily swap. there's tons of information on here already, a search should give you plenty to read about...you'll have some decisions to make based on:

for 96-98 you'll need the first exhaust manifold piece as well since those years are single port exhausts.

97-98 is interference.

all EJ25's i've seen have EGR, so getting an EJ22 with EGR helps if you have emissions and don't want to work around that. i actually prefer non-EGR EJ22's since they're more reliable. i have no desire to intentionally add unnecessary unreliability to my vehicles.

1995 - only automatic EJ22's have EGR

1996-1998 - most all have EGR, but you'll have to ask to be sure, there are a few rare non-EGR models and i'm not sure why but there's no model/trim that confirms it so you have to ask to be sure.

I bought a 97 2.2. The guy at the yard asked me several times if my lego was a MT. Well my lego ob is a MT so I said yes each time he asked. Well turns out I got a non-egr engine which lead me to a series of problems that almost made me give up. Don't let these guys talk in code to you, make sure you tell them what you want, and they are clear about what they have. There are surprises waiting out there.

I have an engine that you can use. It is dual port exhaust, but I have the first "Y" pipe to go with it. It only hads 79k on it and was a good rinner when it was pulled. It was originally purchased for a swap that never got done. Just need it out of the shop. PM me for more info or you can call me 804-393-0516. I'm close too, so there's no need to ship.
