Tony2toes
First off hi, I just registered here the other day and this place is a treasure trove of info! Alright so I bought a '91 Legacy AWD awhile ago for 100 bucks. Did a bunch of body work and stuff and just the other day I changed the water pump and timing belt. Real easy on these cars by the way. Anyways Ive got a strange problem now, the coolant system isnt building pressure. It gets up to temperature and stays there but you can squeeze the upper radiator hose under the hood and its like the car isnt running. It is hot though. There arnt any huge clouds of steam or anything coming out of the exhaust and it dousnt apear to be losing coolant, at least not a noticeable amount from me driving to the end of my road and back. No coolant in the oil according to me checking the dipstick. And the engine seems to run fine. Now if I rev the engine while holding the hose I can feel it pressurize then shrink back down to no pressure with the rpm drop. I ran the car (very briefly) with most of the coolant drained in order to drive it up onto some ramps but it was no more than a minute from a cold start. Could I have possibly overheated it while refilling the coolant system? The thing thats bugging me now too is that before now I only drove the car to my house so I dont know if it was doing this before or if I somehow caused it. I really hope the headgaskets arnt leaking though. Any ideas ?
screwbaru2
Sounds like there's air in the system. Doubtful you blew the HG's doing what you said you did. If there's a philps screw head looking plug on the passenger side of the radiator remove it. Pour coolant into the rad until it comes out the bleeder hole. You may need to repeat it after the engine is warm or you can bring the motor to operating temp to open the t-stat, with the cap loose. And fill it again until the coolant comes out the bleeder hole. idosubaru
you definitely didn't blow the headgaskets by doing what you did. most likely they aren't blown at all. all EJ engines are a bit tricky to get all of the air out of the system. i have a thread from just a week or so about it - i suggest you read that thread. there are multiple suggestions on how to get all the air out of the system.
