i got this car cause it was only 250 bucks i want to mod it with my

10 year old son we want off-road and more power it has a 5 spd and push button 4x4 i also use it to deliver news papers daily so i need it to be reliable can i mod my stock engine i want alot more power :grin:

thanks i may need to do the ej swap first i think i have a blown head gasket i smell anti-freeze from the exhaust what car is the best donor and what all will i need i am a good shade tree mech and want to do all the work with my son also what is the going rate for the ej22 ej20 or ej25 turbo or no? i can rebiuld engines thank u for all your help

are there any books on these cars with spec and horsepower raitigs for subarus

94 was the last year for the loyale.

 

we have the Subaru Factory Service Manual for the XT's over on the Subaruxt.com forum. Not your car, but will have the EA82 engine info in it.

 

might want to define "a lot more power". if you really want more power, then it's not worth it, not practical, can't be done, however you want to word it with the EA82.

 

if you just want it to look, feel, seem, and "sound" fast then just stop at your local ricer shop and buy all the add ons they sell or get them off ebay.

 

you can read all day long on here about the EA82, it's a really poor engine for any mods. in general, small non-turbo engines just don't have much to gain.

 

it's an extremely reliable engine if you're up to doing all the needed maintenance on a 15+ year old engine.

 

as for the coolant leak, it could be the intake manifold gasket. they're much easier to replace and only cost a few dollars. the MPFI EA82's have a coolant cross over that can (and often does) bleed coolant into the combustion chamber. it gives coolant loss and similar to headgasket signs.

 

but at this age there's plenty of chances for headgasket failure too since people don't keep up with maintenance on these things and typically overheat them - blowing the head gasket.

 

EJ swaps are a great bet. excellent motor. and lots of info on here.

what about cost and where do i find the trany i won't be off-ROAD alot but do need fuel economy the cars main job is the paper route (6hrs at 25mph or just idleing)

email the guy and get a "ball park" figure on the STi lump an stuff

just found a 92 svx for 1000 eg33? worth getting or not (whole car)

I started with a 92 loyale. Same everything yours has, including the leaking intake manifold gaskets. Instead of fixing it, I just threw some stop leak in the radiator and called it a day. Stopped the coolant clouds going out the exhaust. However, I would recommend replacing the gaskets, they're way easy and cheap.

 

Then I checked the timing and found out someone had retarded the distributor. Advanced the distributor back to specs and got a lot of power back. Engine would still bogg out before the tires would loose traction though.

 

The first big mod I did was swapping in a dual range 4x4 transmission. Came out of an 1986 3 door that had been my first car. Biggest single improvement you can make to those cars. If you do the twin stick mod to it, you can use the low range in two wheel drive. Might be helpful for paper delivery. Having the lower gearing makes up a LOT for the lack of power. Enough that you won't want to swap the engine.

 

Hell the stock engine could still pull my loyale up to 97mph with 30" mud tires and a 4" lift. It's not really that bad if it's running good. Make sure that the rubber intake boot still has the part right on top of the engine that says SPFI in big letters. If it's missing, the tube will collapse at higher engine rpm and smother performance. The EJ swap isn't a quick fix. I'd wait untill after you have big tires and a lift to even think about swapping.

 

 

Do the dual range transmission out of a 86-89 gl. it can be carburated or spfi like yours, but it can't be turbo. Make sure it has the timing belts. It has to be an EA82 to fit. Put a remanufactured clutch disk in while you have the transmission out. With that and the intake gaskets, you'll be happy with the car for a while.
