'89 GL Turbo Wagon front end parts question

Featured Replies

Hello everybody,

I have a questions for the Old Subaru's Gurus. I need to change a lower control arm and a leading rod (and possibly a steering knuckle) on the right hand side of my 1989 GL 4WD Turbo Wagon (it has a 4EAT tranny).

Now, I have had in the past some issues with this very car regarding replacement parts. For some reason, the combination of 4WD, Turbo and 4EAT makes it a one of a kind...

The question I have is the following: for the parts I am looking to change (lower control arm, leading rod and steering knuckle), can I use parts from any DL/GL/Loyale out there (1985-1994) or do I need to hunt for another 4WD turbo wagon in a junkyard? My first guess is anything out there should work, but I am not 100% sure.

Thanks for your help.

The only suspension piece that is different is the actual engine crossmember.

All the rest will work from any DL/GL/Loyale or even an XT

I have the excct same car. GL(not GL-10) Turbo wagon, w/4eat

really the only weird part is the 4eat. They use 25 spline axles. The 2wd and turbo with the 3sp Auto use a 23 spline. And half the friggin stores have incorrect listings anyway. Just always tell them Manual trans w/turbo and you will get the right ones.

All you're other engine parts should be same as any other GL/GL-10/Loyale turbo from 88-90.

You will need the long 110 mm waterpump(dealer AC)

Thank you! I appreciate very much your help. That's what I thought but it's always better to hear from somebody who's "been there done that".

And yes, I ran through that very issue with the axles... painful...
