Hey how ya'll doing? I'm new here and new to Subaru's just picked up a 86' XT with the EA82 non-turbo:mad: for 200 bucks. the car had been sitting for several years and needed a fuel pump. i replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cleaned up a couple grounds and changed the muffler, spark plugs/wires and oil. i also drained 90% of the gas out and threw in fresh gas and a couple additives. it's been improving with every mile put on it. but my question is the car when you floor it kinda stumbles at 3k and 4k rpms but pushes through it. is there something i need to take into consideration or is it just the old gas working its way out? and also i have a divorced coil for a 454 chevy, if i put this on my car will i see any improvement in spark or is it just a waste of my time.

Welcome to the forum , wonder wedges are very cool. You might be picking up sediment out of the tank. When they sit gas tends to go bad and other stuff settles to the bottom. While running again can stir all this up and suck stuff into the pump and filter. I have had good luck with accel super coils on Subarus before. Some folks on here have reported poor results from hi performance coils though.

well i threw the coil in there and it seemed to help with startup idle and low rpms, but again cause of the whole fuel situation i cant turn real high rpms yet. i just think if i run it for a good bit of miles it might clear up. but do to the lack of registration right now i am restricted to my neighborhood. i was also wondering the recemended fuel rating for the car. thanks -ryan

I too have a 1986 XT that was sitting for a few years with not much gas in the tank. I drove it 200 miles to school and the fuel pump died and it wouldn't restart. It was having trouble at 3-4k rpm but fine otherwise. I drained the tank and the first gallon came out rusty. I replaced the pump and drove home, I'm installing a new gas tank this weekend due to the original one rusted on the inside. I found a suitable gas tank at pick and pull, unfortunately I couldn't use it because they punch holes in gas tanks to remove gas. New tanks are under $200 shipped from rock auto.

 

I came to the conclusion the tank was rusted inside by peeling off the fuel gauge sender cover (metal plate under trunk pad, sealed with goop) removing the 5 or 6 10mm nuts and the sender, and carefully shining a flashlight into the tank.

 

After I replace the tank I'll open up the old one with a grinder and see how bad it was.

hey man i appretiate any imput i can get. let me know how the tank looks once you crack it open.

 

i think the fresh fuel i put in there is a little questionable too, seeing how i live 500 feet from a river and the gas station isnt to much farther away there has to be some water in there.
