dakos
i need to replace the instrument cluster from my 99 forester. will be the new cluster still showing the mileage on my car or the mileage stored in to the replacement cluster?? thanks a lot!! ShawnW
I believe its stored in the cluster itself. You have to take the cluster to the dealer and have them send it in to be reprogrammed to your odometer reading or find a shop that specializes in this. Personally I would think making a verified notarized statement of mileage and inserting the new cluster at 0 would be ok too though you might google what the laws require for correct odometer readings. idosubaru
look for a used on close to the same mileage as yours and call it good? i'd wonder if an earlier or later model year would work, the 99 odometers are notoriously problematic for some reason, i'm not sure how one year can be worse than others. idosubaru
good question. i've "heard" of "switches" to toggle between the two but never seen confirmation myself. maybe you could just call a junk yard or find someone that has one to look at? i can verify that at least on all the Subaru's i've done it to you can actually drive with no instrument cluster in place! it's pretty awesome cruising down the road with nothing in there and nothing to look at. it's much more strange than i thought it would be:lol: just in case you get in a pickle while doing it, it's nice to know the car will still run fine. as often as the 99's fail the dealer might have one in stock or know :lol:. There are many threads on boards about those from Canada coming and buying a 'gray' vehicle in the US. This is one of the first questions followed by warranty work has to be done back in the US. SOC ( Subaru of Canada ) will not do warranty work on a vehicle purchased in the US and 1st new registration is Canada. They will cross honor warranty work for those visiting during a breakdown, or those transferred for employment, but in these cases the car was registered first in the US. Sorry to digress, but I have some Canadian friends who have done this.
