June 5, 200916 yr i have a 92 legacy. non tubo mpfi automatic trans with a lsd i think its called i think it is a 6aml or something like that i looked but dont remember the number exactly. there are two buttons near the shifter. i dont have any cant find a good deal on a owners manual. what are these buttons for one of them says manual the other i have no idea what it does.
June 5, 200916 yr The "manual" button on the shifter is meant to be a primitive form of traction control. When the Shifter is in "2" (and maybe "3"; I forget, but others can clarify) and this button is pressed, it prevents the transmission from downshifting into first gear. This limits wheel spin in low-traction conditions. The other button, I assume, is the one on the shifter bezel. It allows you to move the shifter out of PARK regardless of ignition key position or foot-on-brake. This is useful for maintenance situations, or when the safety interlock gets a little confused. (Also, I think it is unlikely that your car has an LSD rear differential.)
June 5, 200916 yr Author there are three button total. the top button is the shifter button. the second button says amnaulk right below it. the third button is down on the shifter bezel. here si a pic or two i just went out and took. the black button in the top of the bezel.
June 5, 200916 yr ^^^ Answer's been given. Most likely not an LSD, those had a tag on them that said "LSD".
June 5, 200916 yr kinda right on the manual button, when you press it in, the instrument cluster bottom row will light in green saying manual when its on manual, the light will be off on the cluster when its off. Like said, its for winter traction. If its on manual mode, when starting out from a dead stop, it will actually not engage first gear, it will start in second gear, less torque less chance of wheel spin. Also, when its engaged, t will not allow for torque converter lockup in the 4th gear overdrive. Its the TC lockup at higher speeds on ice that causes cars to spin out, so when its manual mode, there is less chance of spinning out when a ice patch is encountered because the tranny is not locked mode..
June 5, 200916 yr My first Legacy also had a Power button on the shifter. Anyone know what that was about? I was always hoping it would be something like an afterburner, but alas, when I pressed it I did not start going mach 1.

I was always hoping it would be something like an afterburner, but alas, when I pressed it I did not start going mach 1. when its off the manual mode, it is in standard mode, but if you press the gas rapidly hard and fast, the TPS sensor determines needing extra umph, and the tranmission TCU shifts it to a higher shift mapping, thus firmer quicker shifts, in power mode, and the power mode light will come on while in this mapping.

June 5, 200916 yr Author ok i misread the first answer last night about the release of the shifter. as far as shifting with hte manual button. my wife puts it in manual when driving around town.she says it slows down the noise it makes i think is what she says. see my other post about lsd problems. maybe it is something to do with a solinoid or the transmission.
