Gen 3 "Short shifter"

Featured Replies

Got a new computer, while digging through my old computer I found pictures of the setup I had in my GL.

This shifter was not a REAL short shifter. The rod for the knob was shortened, but it still moved the stock number of degrees. It still felt a lot better though.

I used a forester leather knob and wheelskins universal shifter boot.

Side by side of old and new

How much I cut off. I later took another inch off it.

Retap the linkage with a 12mm 1.25 pitch die. Good luck finding one though

Feel free to ask any questions. I did this conversion years ago and the car has been in Subaru heaven for some years, but it still lives on in pieces :)

There should be a thread shortly in off topic regarding the beer caps :drunk:

Mike, those taps are actually fairly easy to come by. I have two, one at work and one at home. Its the same thread as Subaru wheel studs:)

yes as far as i know all manual subaru vehicles use the same 12mm 1.25 pitch. I know for sure that EJ's do and gen 3's do. and I had a gen 3 shifter on a gen 2 so they should match too. Cant speak for gen 1 or older stuff like 360's though.
