Is there a top and bottom to valve springs? I didn't notice any difference in the spacing of the top and bottom spirals. I own a 90 Legacy 2.2. These are stock valve springs. Thanks!

Yes, there is a top and bottom.

 

On EJ22s, the difference in the spiral is more difficult to see, so Subaru painted the top (either green or yellow). They have to be clean to see it, and it's faint, but it's there.
