96 Legacy w/ Electrical Problems

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I've got a 96 Legacy 2.2L that really has been a splendid car. It was due for a problem, so I can't really complain. After a routine oil change I started the car and had it cut out after about 5 seconds. This continued the next 3 or 4 times I started the car, so I assumed it must be an alternator. I took off the alternator, brought it to a parts store, and sure enough it was dead. However, after buying and installing a new alternator, I still can't get the car to run for more than 4 or 5 seconds...

Do you all have any ideas as to what else could be awry? I'm beyond broke, and can't get to work without the Subaru, so I'm in a bit of a pickle.

it's probably a vacuum hose. look under the air intake tube, big 4" black tube , about half way between the air filter and the 'air box' at the rear of the engine. the hose will slip off when the air filter box is opened and cause the car not to run / idle correctly. _ _it happens.

you alternator may not have been bad, but who knows.

You are a saint, sir. That's got to be the hissing sound coming from near the engine when I start up. I'm assuming I connect it back into the engine?

Thanks a million. And I guess at least I have a shiny new alternator now.

it fits into the under side of the air tube. let us know if that doesn't fix it.

you are quite welcome.
