Winchs wanted!

Recommended Posts

I'm going to put a winch on Summer. I don't know a thing about them. However I did pick up one of those $49 Harbor Freight #2000 ones discussed in previous posts.

Can anyone explain what the rolling weight means on a winch vs a strait pull? I have been getting conflicting info from under qualified parts store people.

Anyone shed some light on requirements and what ratings mean for winches?

Thanks,

Glenn

Rolling weight would be how heavy of a vehicle it could pull up an incline. Straight pull would be how much it could actually lift off the ground. The steeper the incline, the closer the rating gets to the straight pull number. The flatter the incline, the closer the rating gets to the rolling weight number.

The 2000 lb winches should be ok for our 80's Subarus, but carry a snatch block for steep inclines. See the link below for examples:

Thanks, Subsandrail

So the rolling rating is pulling a rolling vehicle on flat ground? (With 60 psi tires on concrete:eek: ).

Seems that the rolling weight is somewhat meaningless, the straight pull would be the only meaningfull figure? I can pull a #2000 pound vehicle:cool:

I figure the buggy will weigh around #1500 when it's done. A #2000 would be 25% over the vehicle weight. I plan on getting a snatch block anyway.

Thanks,

Glenn

From what I've seen in all the catalogs etc, the rolling load rating seems to refer more to winching a vehicle up onto a trailer. That doesn't help much though, since we don't know how steep the ramp is. I mean like ramp trucks can be fairly steep whereas a car trailer isn't much at all. And who knows how steep a given boat launch might be.

On my hatchback I have a 1500lb Superwinch that was a dealer option on a '79 Brat. It's a good little winch for being so old. Even without a snatchblock (pulley) I've been able to pull the front of my car sideways in soft soil and also one time it got me off a burm I was high centered on. It was not able to pull me up a very steep and rock strewn trail even with me driving in 2wd mode. And that's not the only time it was just too dang wimpy. Now I'm upgrading to a 4500ld Superwinch. Hope that helps.
