I have an extra OEM manual shifter from 02 WRX. Does it fit 96 Outback 5 speed? And would it provide shorter throw than the 96 outback?

Thanks

You'll have to get under the car and check the Trans shift linkage u-joint.  There are a couple of different configurations.

The shifter throw will likely be very similar if not the same as your 96 Outback.  I had 02 WRX shifter in my Legacy and it felt the same as my 97 Impreza.
