Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and I need to ask this question because I recently picked up a 98 Legacy Outback Wagon with an automatic transmission.  I believe that it is a 4 speed transmission (at least that is what I am reading from the specs), but my question relates to the engine RPMs.  What is the approximate RPMs for the speed (MPH) ranges for each gear?  The reason that I am asking this question is because I own other cars (a bit newer) and neither one of those (which are not Subaru's) are running at about 2200 RPMs at 65 MPH.  I have notice that in the Outback wagon, that it runs about 500-700 RPMs higher at 65 MPH.  I'm sure that this is ok due to the higher gear ratios, but I just want to be sure that nothing is wrong.  The Outback has standard size tires and appears to otherwise run great.  Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if this question has already been answered.

Thank you.

You should be running around 3k RPM at 70, as mentioned, it has a 4.44 final drive.

If you want to use a gear ratio calculator, these are the transmission gear ratios:

1st: 3.027 - 2nd:1.619 - 3rd:1.000 - 4th:0.694 - R:2.272

Remember if the torque converter isn't locked the RPM will be about 10% higher.
