Would STI or 4piston calipers fit on my 96 Legacy 2.5L?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. This is my first post here.

I just got this 96 Legacy and the front rotors are all grooved and warped on the inside so I'm going to replace them, and also the calipers that caused this.

Since I'm going to replace the whole brake system anyway, I might as well upgrade. I searched the forum last night and found that many subaru parts are interchangeable but didn't find much on upgrading Legacies to 4-piston front calipers.

So my question is are there any subarus with 4-piston calipers that could potentially interchange with a 96 Legacy without severe fabrication?

im sorry, your car does not have a V6, it would have a flat4 or horazontally oposed 4 cylnder engine, boxer type, or its a GT which had the flat 4 still but in a 2.5litre.

just wanted to help you out in your info, no trying to sound like a wongleflute.

My bad. :banghead: It was my friend's old car and I only drove it on the quick test drive and then home. I hadn't even popped the hood yet when I put up that message earlier cause he pretty much gave it to me since I gave him the wheels that were on it and he didn't want the car anymore. I just knew he told me it was a 2.5L and one of my Probes was a 2.5L V6 so I just assumed the same. The brakes were so shakey on the test drive (even slowing from low speeds) I did have to check those out and they have to go. I've already made a fool of myself, but this is my first Subaru so I only know what I've read in the last 24 hours.

Regardless, does anyone know the measurement between the 2 bolts where the Impreza calipers meet the bracket? I can find these things for sale on the web but never with a picture or dimensions. If the measurements are close then I can either trim the bracket down or shim the bracket out to get the offset to match the rotors' offsets. Otherwise I'll just have to make a new bracket. I did this once before on some RX7 Calipers and a Mazda so it shouln't be too difficult.

Sorry again for my newbie error.

What makes you think that the Impreza brakes are going to be different then the Legacy brakes? They are exactly the same dimensions (2 pot or single pot), they are interchangeable. You will not need to get different wheels. You only need different wheels if you go with the 4 pot calipers.

Hey, don't worry about the V6 mistake, I see Subarus listed all the time on the web and in news papers with V6s, so it is pretty common.

Are you sure you want to make these brake changes? I had a '96 for over 150,000 miles and was quite happy with the performance of the OE brakes. Why not just go for new rotors & rebuilt calipers if you need them (in my experience, needing new rotors hasn't always meant I needed new calipers).

Good luck,

Bill

At the present time, it's starting to look like I might end up replacing the calipers with OEM rebuilds. I can't find anyone that sells the STI brakes but subaru because they're so new. And I can't find any measurements on the things anywhere at all on the web.

Did the WRX's also come with 4-piston front calipers any years or any of the other Subarus like maybe the SVX or anything at all?

It's just really rare that I replace OEM parts with OEM parts if I can find or make any upgrade at all. I really hate to do it unless I have to.

Just cause im in that kinda mood I'll say it, This isn't a pos ford, we dont have crappy v's. I like my engines like i like my women, balanced :)

Anyway, to use subaru 4 pots you need wheels with at least 7" of width, with still the correct amount of offset, and a caertain spoke design. The 98-01 rs wheels work perfectly for this. Most other new gen subaru whells are 6.5" wide, so they wont fit w/o a spacer but then you chang the offset of the wheel. The only car that came factory with 4 pots that is redily availabe is the sti. And those need at least a 17" wheel. Svx brakes would be m,ore of a headache, since they have a different lug pattern, 5x114 instead of 5x100 which we use. Wrx and leg turbo brakes use 2pots and require at least the stock size of the wheels they're mounted on. Almost all other brakes are single pot.

Thank You.

Looks like it's either STI brakes or OEM then cause the OEM's are already 2-piston. The wheels won't be a problem; the car's already on 18" six spokes. So I'll drive up to the subaru dealership later on today and get some measurements on the STI calipers and decide from there.

Thanks everybody.

No problem, I aim to please ;)

Don't take this the wrong way, but since you seem a little uninformed, what width and offset are your wheels? I have a feeling you've got something too low of an offset, and are causing damage to the hubs/bearings/ etc. Also just to be sure you understood what I was saying your brakes are currently single pot, 2 pot brakes were only available from 91-94 on the tubro legacy's and from 02 on on wrx's, there might be more now with all the turbo cars, but those are the onyl ones I've heard about.

These are the exact wheels I have. http://www.whalentire.com/wheeldetail.cfm?wheelnumber=ADR5075810H42W&size=18 They are 18 X 7.5" with a 42mm offset.

When I took the calipers off, they were 2-piston, same side calipers so maybe some goofball replaced his stock ones with those or maybe not since this http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails.asp?SourceArea=&SourcePage=SEARCHRESULTS&MfrCode=A1C&MfrPartNumber=191535&PartType=5003&PTSet=A is what I come up with when I look for 96 Legacy 2.5 calipers on partsamerica and autozone's websites.

I have been to some Subaru dealerships since my last post. Subaru has the LAZIEST parts/service guys in the country but they're sales guys are amazingly helpful. They let me crawl under an STI in the showroom and measure things for a while and sure enough...the caliper mounting points are completely identical, so things are looking up. I will have to go back though because I still need to get the Rotor Disc width, Master Cylinder diameter, and the distance from the center of the rotor to the outer edge of the Caliper (for this Clearance/wheel offset issue.
