m100elan Posted January 18, 2005 Share Posted January 18, 2005 Hello, all, thanks for putting up this forum. I'm a newbie, just registered a couple minutes ago and posting for the first time. I've had a lot of cars over the years, but never owned or had to work on any subies, so I had a quick question for you guys. There's a car for sale here in Hawaii, very cheap, the owners says he took it to a shop and they told him cam timing sensor was broken... he describes power suddenly stopped, no warning, and no partial power; just zero in a second. I can't find any posts with this particular item, and the pics of the cam timing belt replacement don't seem to be up right now. I don't know if they got a code to diagnose this or not, I'm just playing with the idea of picking this car up real cheap to help out a friend who is walking to the grocery store everday (he's 70 years old and has no family here) 1) can any of you guys send me a pic or point me to one that shows the cam timing sensor? Are there 1 per bank or only 1 for the entire engine? Hard to get to? lots of ancillary parts removal? Time to completion? Also, does this part throw a code? or did they diagnose this by the seat of their pants? 2) where are the best online parts places that can send me this part quickly? thanks for any help, I've got lots of experience with Honda and Porsche, if you've got questions there pls feel free to drop me an email. coloradosubarules Posted January 18, 2005 Share Posted January 18, 2005 I have a 90 legacy 90-94 are mostly alike. EJ22 2.2 4cyl engines. I know of only one cam sensor and it is mounted on the drivers side timing cover. It is on the rear of the timing belt cover. If you were to pull the timing cover off you would see it attached to the other hal of the timning cover. It looks like a watch battery from the front. Shouldn't be too hard to replace. Do a search on the board for "legacy trouble codes." Also look up legacy777 (josh) and see his website (link at bottom of one of his posts) there you will find the codes as well. subie94 Posted January 18, 2005 Share Posted January 18, 2005 about 2yrs ago i had a 92 legacy wagon that needed a timing belt replaced on it. if i remember correctly:-\ there were 1 sensor . not sure about a quick delivery on-line site.(guess depends how much u wanna spend on shipping.)as far as i remember,a code didn't trip the check engine light,but like i said before if i remember correctly. hope i was some help if any. ballitch Posted January 18, 2005 Share Posted January 18, 2005 i think the Cam Sensor is on the top of the engine on the right side, you will see a couple wires in a heatshink-type covering going to a connector, right side meaning looking down at the engine from under the hood. I have no idea why they would say the cam angle sensor would be the problem, if it has no power for a bit, then normal power sounds like a fuel or spark kinda thing, or maybe a loose ground? Did you ask them why it was a cam angle sensor problem, BTW are there any Subaru dealerships over in hawaii? lots of questions for a new join-ee, but the more answers you give us the better chance we have of giving you a better guess on whats wrong. ~Josh~ Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
