2.2 or 2.5 engine in 1998 Legacy L?

Recommended Posts

I've been told by a mechanic that it is a 2.5 Another one said it's definately a 2.2

Which is it?

Is there a place on the car where it's notated?

Hi Joe,

Definitely a 2.2L which, btw, as most people on this board will probably tell you, is a more reliable engine. I have the same car.

Yeah usually with the 97, 98, 99's they have a logo on the trunk that say 2.5GT if it is the 2.5

Yours is a 2.2, if you look at the vin plate under the hood on the driver side of the engine bay by the strut mount, it should say EJ22 or EJ25 on it.

I would suggest the 2.2 also, I actually had the 2.5 and am downgrading to the 2.2 for not only better reliability but for gas mileage also.

I have the same 98 Legacy L, and mine has 2.2L.

I also had 1.8L in Loyale and and a 2.5L in a newer OBW.

2.2L is nearly as nice as 2.5L power wise but without the problems. Supposedly 2.2L will last a long time.
