  1. I just had it done on my 1999 Legacy L wagon. The separator plate was plastic, so thanks a bunch for the good advice I got here. One more part I'd add would be the clutch cable (if your car has cable operated clutch vs hydraulic one).

I am not sure how it is done (there was an article on this exact topic in Autoweek some years ago), but it accomplishes the following: When you are downshifting, touble clutch trick allows you to match the RPMs of the motor to that of your transmission , so the downshift is accomplished smoother, without the lurch. There was a lady rally-racer on this forum, she might explain it in more detail.
  3. 99legacy 5sp. Recently my engine developed squeaking that sounds like belt squeaking. I checked the tension and condition of the two visible blets (not the timing) - they both have correct tension and are in good shape.I bought the car used last year with 127K miles. Now it has 146K miles. What could be the reason of this squeaking? Should I replace those belts anyway? Thanks for any advice. Alex
  4. Need clutch replacement on my 99 Legacy wagon. The car has 144K mi on it. Two questions: 1. Is anything else recommended to change while replacing the clutch due to easier access/time savings as things are taken apart? 2. Is it better to order a new clutch from one of the Subaru parts mail order or just let the shop (this will be an independent shop) do the whole thing including getting the part(s) all by themselves?   5. Sorry, I left the 2nd question in the middle. So the air filter box is not opening up after undoing the three snaps. Am I missing something? Is there a fourth or something else must be unbolted? Owners manual is not helpful. One more question. Is there any truth to motor oils for "high mileage" cars? It costs about the same as synthetic blend or about $2.50-$2.70 US. Is it more economical for a 130K mi Legacy ('99) or just plain petro-based oil is just as good? Or is it better to go full synthetic? I live in NJ bu my daily driving is close to 100 mi, mostly high speed highway. I had a '95 Legacy Brighton, put 185K mi on it with full synthetic oil until it was hit hard from the rear and totalled. The engine run really smooth with oil changes between 5 and 6 K miles.
  6. 1. Where can I get an aftermarket repair/maintenance manual for 99 Legacy Wagon L (not Outback)? Haynes has 95-98 year manual, which doesn't seem to cover the '99 engine. 2. Air filter replacement: I unclasped the three visible clasps on the filter case (on my engine it is an elongated black box not far from the firewall and parallel to it. Would appreciate any info.
  7. I have a 99 Legacy L Wagon with manual transmission. Then the clutch is engaged there is a noise as if a frayed cable is rubbing (TFT-TFT-TFT-TFT), increasing in frequency with RPM. When I shif gears and step on the clutch, it disappears and reappears when the cluch is re-engaged in a new gear. What could it be and how to take care of it?:cornfuzz:
