  1. I need a new alt. on my 83 and after reading about the xt6 swap in the repair manual it sound like a good idea. (im planning on putting in a extra deep cycle battery to run lights sterio ects..) Is thier in difference in the xt6 alts through out the years, is one year better/cheeper then others. Thanks David
  2. The fuse dont blow right away after the first one blew i drove for a couple days and before it blew, the next one was after a hour or so. I dont want to drive the car knowing at any minute the car could just stop running. In my mind the draw the draw on circuit should be constant, because the only thing on that circuit is the coil. If some one has a wiring diagram of that circuit that they could scan it would help a lot. Now that i think of it the battery gadge on the dash goes out too. Im still trying to identify the five wires coming off the coil. david
  3. I have an 83 4wd wagon that has now blown the fuse for the coil three times. Each time seems unrelated to the others i cant seem to find pattern. I been looking for a short that would lead to this but the wires all run through the loom and i cant follow them. The coil has three wires on the positive and two on the negitive, On the positive side one is power one is for the tack, and on the negitive one is the ground i dont know what the other two wires do( one positive and one negitive) Thanks David
  4. the pick up coil was a guess since the cap rotors plugs and wires are new, if the 2wd distys work i have one i can get. On the otherhand i cant find anything in the manual about an ignition modual that some one had mentioned as a posibility. Where is that located? is their a way to test it? Thanks for all the help David
  5. What is the difference between the two distributors? (2wd vs 4wd) i can get my hands on a 2wd drive, but the manual lead me to believe that they had diffentent manufactures. Is a 4wd one better than a 2wd one? thanks for the help. David
  6. All the stuff is new since the car died, reading the trouble shooting part in my haynes manual it leads me to the pick up coil in the distributor, it is a 150.00 part at napa, it seems like a lot for a part that i dont know thats broken. I was wondering if anyone local had a extra distriburtor that i could buy this piece from. I think that it only can come from an 81-84 4wd, becasue they use a different dist. than the 2wd. Thanks David If you can help my e-mail is davidbuswell@comcast.net I would go to a junk yard but my schedule hasn't allowed it.
  7. How common is it for the internals of the distributor to go bad? Im getting spark from the coil to the distributor but then only spark at two of the plugs. All the wires, plugs, cap, rotor and coil are new and it still doesnt get spark to two of the plugs. My only guess is to replace the whole distributor. Sounds like a big job and didnt want to do it if others thought that it wasnt the problem. Thanks a lot. David (this is all on my 83 gl 4wd wagon with a weber)
  8. I havent tested the ign. module but testing the differnt wires with a timing light while cranking the engine, i have found that i get a consistant spark from the coil to the distriburter, and then get speratic spark on two of the plug wires. I have already replaced the coil, wires and plugs. This makes me think that it is in the interanls of the distribuator. Any other ideas would be great. Thanks David
  9. This is on my 83 4wd wagon gl with a weber I went snowboarding at MT baker sunday the snow was awsome. On the way home i noticed that i was loosing power and had to keep the car floored to keep the speed constant. I get to a stoplight and the car dies. it starts and I get it into a parking lot. Theres a huge lack of power. I pop the hood and start checking hoses for vacume leaks. Then i go start the car again and it cranks but wont even sputter, and the battery gadge in the car zeroed but the light isnt on. I pull the wire from the coil and the treminal end breaks off (i have a accel super stock, and accel 8mm wires they are a month old) I go buy a new coil and wires and put them in and the car still just cranks and wont sputter. I Check the fuse and 15a coil fuse is burnt and so i relplace it. Then the car starts but idle ruff and then dies. The carb clearly has vacume leak i cant seem to find it though sprade starting fuild all over and their was no change in the idle. Then i let it rest and now it seems that the coil isnt getting power again. THe fuse is fine. I was wondering if any one had ideas what down the line from coil casue it to first cook the terminal end of the wire and then blow the fuse. and keep power from getting to the coil at all. Thanks a lot dave
  10. I've pulled the wheel hub axel from the right side and the outer wheel baring has a slight grinding feeling when i turn it by hand. So i am guessing that it needs to be pulled and repacked/replaced. Thanks for the help David
  11. The sound stays constant with speed, it has nothing to with engine RPM's, whether its in gear or not. It doesnt sound like a clicking CV joint and none of boots are riped. THe front pads look ok and the the noise doesnt change when you hit the brakes. This is my first 4wd so i dont know what the transfercase or rear diff sound like if or when they go bad. Im going to start taking things a part and looking around so any ideas would be very helpful. David
  12. On my 4wd 83 wagon I get a wherring noise, which sounds like bad tires but changed the tires and the noise is the same. The faster the noise the louder the noise is. I thought it was the front left wheel baring and changed that but its still their. When i turn to the left and the weight transfers to the right the noise goes away. Others tell me that i doent sound like a wheel baring. Now im trying to figure what else could make this whering sound. Any ideas would be great. Thanks David
  13. Thanks a lot looks like i need to take the pannel off and take a look at the lock from that side. Thanks for the help. David
  14. Looking in the repair manuals it seems that you need a press and a couple other specality tools to replace the front wheel bearing on an 83 4wd wagon. I was wondering if these tools are completely nessacary for the job, or can you get them in and out with out pulling the whole stearing knuckle and pound them in and out with a hammer. Thanks david
  15. I have an 83 wagon and i cant get the rear lift hatch to lock the key will only turn to the right, which doesnt lock it. It wont turn to the left at all.I am just making sure that theres not another way to lock it before i start taking things apart. It doesnt have auto locks i dont know if thats an option on 83's. Thanks David
  16. I just got my 83 4wd wagon up and running and now i want to take it off road and play in some dirt. It's pretty stock except for 15 pugs and slightly bigger tires, i was wondering if their are any good trails around Seattle or the eastside (i live i woodinville) that i wouldn't get in to too much trouble at. I know about reiter pit but all the pictures seem a little exteam for a stock wagon. Thanks David
  17. The first time one of mine went out i just kept driving untill it exploded while doing a U-turn. After that it is pretty clear that the CV needs to be changed. It makes it easier though when you can take the CV out in two pieces.
  18. I was interested in a bumper mounted tire rack too. I snowboard and wakeboard a lot, and i carry the boards on a rack on the roof, then i have all my gear in hatch of my 83 wagon. I thought that a bumper rack would be the best way to carry a 28in spare tire. David
  19. I understand the difference between the usage of fogs and brights thats way i was going to wire them up to a three way switch with them coming on with the brights on just one setting. This is on an 83 gl 4speed 4wd. if knew the wire color it would help a lot. Thanks David
  20. Thanks guys i am actualy going to wire them to a three setting switch so that i can have them come on with the brights, on when ever, and always off. I figure i would wire this the same way and just your advice for the one setting, and use a perminent 12v sorce for the other.
  21. I remember seeing a post where it explained how to wire your fog lights to come on when you turn your brights on. I searched for the post but i came up empty. Thanks David
  22. it has only one electrical fan and it seems to be running intermitingly. Which is another problem i have to address. I was really hoping that someone would have an idea what causes the idel to raise. Did these cars have coolent temp sensors, i didnt think so. I just can think of a way that the engine temp would affect the the throtle. Thanks for the help David
  23. I have a 83 4wd gl wagon, i have a weber on it. With the hot weather we have had lately in washington, the cars has been running hotter. I noticed that when the temp gadge reads over 3/4 the car revs to 3000 rpms by its self. It seems to me that this is not helping the car cool down quicker, but i could be wrong. I am in the process of getting a new radiator and adding another electric fan for cooling. Im am wondering why the car is doing this, it also happened when i had the old hitachi on. Thanks David
  24. Not meaning to highjack this thread but wheres the 2nd fuel filter on an 83'. Theres the one under the hood by the wind shield on the drivers side, wheres the other one. Thanks David
  25. Thanks for the help i'l give them all a try, it is the redline kit from carbs unlimited. Do you guys have any ideas for a better fuel pump i know people were running pumps out of other cars. I set the fuel air screw to what was in the directions. Im actualaly glad that it is problay something to do with the carb because this car is seeming to take forever to get running, and all i need is another problem. Thanks David
