  1. looks like a slide boot. make sure that those are greased well. mine froze up and caused some issues. sub does have a kit available.
  2. I just went through this on my 93. it sounds to me that your slides are frozen. Subaru does make a rebuild kit (for my 93 anyway) comes with new o rings and caliper boots. I could not get the clips back in and the pads rattle. I should have bought new calipers but here in my area the best price I got was well over $200 bucks apeice.
  3. I just did the brakes on mine and on my 93 the pads will go either way. the tabs on the front were on the outside and the rears were on the inside. I have done the brakes once before, so I cant say for sure that this was the way they were from the factory. Anyway it did not matter cuz the pads wore uneven and I had to free all 4 caliper slides.
  4. my 93 does the same thing. owners manual says it standard and helps dry the air out
  5. I to wondered if my awd worked after a got my 93. during the first winter I found out that it did work. I had to spin the fronts for maybe 15 secs and then I heard a clunk and would drive off. After figureing out that athe clunk was the rear locking up, I would just ease the gas and wait till I felt it, then drive off. After reading fj401968 post, I agree, just like any other thing that has gears that it will get a little sloppy (maybe my clink)
  6. i generally do all my repairs but it would be nice to have a new car. with a proven reliable car yoy wouldnt have much for repairs but the needed maintenance fee that the warrenty requires will empty your wallet in a hurry.
  7. ok guys, since I cant find the manual I bought, were is the metal ring and how do I get it off?
  8. I just had the same problem with my 93, I had to drive the bolt bushing out and clean up everything. There is a caliper rebuild kit available through Subaru for around $35 us (my area anyway) you may want to check out my post on rebuilding them
  9. thanks guys for the info. sounds a little tricky, but yet quik and easy. I assume when removing the piston, blow air in were the brake line bolts to the caliper
  10. I priced out a loaded caliper and it was 120 +/-. I paid 20 bucks for pads and 35 bucks for the rebuild kit. 55 bucks and all i really need are the three boots for the slides. ruffly 60 bucks saved and it wont take me long to get it done. it will be harder to get the car out of the road long enough to do it.
  11. on my 93 legacy wagon. i had to buy a rebuild kit to get the 3 boots that i need for the slides. the kit comes with a new boot for the piston. how do i get it out of the housing?
  12. the left inner pad was worn out, no seperation. Yes I pulled, well actually had to beat the bushing out. it was that rusted up. pulled the old dry rotted boots off, put the high temp never seize to them and put them back together. I ordered a caliper rebuild kit today from suby. 35 bucks, but it was the only way i could get the 3 boots that each side needs. should be here in a few days. then i will have to pull the calipers out again.
  13. Just I word to the ones that don't no much about them. I recently got a grinding noise in the front brakes and today when i got them off, the left inside pad was gone. the outer was only about half used up. The last time I did the brakes was the first time i had done any and did not make sure the slide the bolt goes through actually moved. MAKE sure it moves or you will have to do like I just did and replace them after 30000 miles. They make a boot kit wich the local part store listed but did not have in stock. I put them back together and will get the kit as soon as I can.
  14. From messing with mine, it sounds like you may either have some air or the preasure is to high. Hopefully Josh will chime in. He seems to be the guru on the subject. Do a search on ac and see if you can find anything Jim
  15. I found this link for the specs on my 93 http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_archive.html After reading this I guess my gass gauge is off more then I thought and I am on the low side of what it calls for gas milage.
  16. If the 93 has a 15 gl tank. that may be one reason that I have yet to get more then 200 miles out of a tank. I am really pushing it when the gauge is on E (I am aware of the gauge issue) My owners maual says that I have a low fuel light but I have never in 6yrs seen it come on. Maybe my gauge is off more then I thought.
  17. The last time I payed attention to the MPG's was last winter while trying to compare to my truck. The Legacy was getting 18-20 vs my truck at 22-24. Since my truck died I have been running the car. I beleive I have either a 10 or 12 gallon tank. I have never out more then about 9 or 10 gallons in. Usually around 7-8 when I fill up. Keep the info coming. Thanks, Jim
  18. After reading the post on OBD codes and the fact of the gas prices, someone mentioned that they were getting 250-300 miles out of a tank of gas. I have a 93 2.2 Legacy wagon that I bought used. The only time that I haver ever managed to get more 200-225 out of a tank was when I took a road trip. Milage nearly doubled. What are you getting for milage and what are some of the things to look for to help increase it? Jim
  19. As with most tests that I have read, I was flawed from the beginning. I was a filter for a GM product, so the GM product was better. I have yet to read anything that truelly reports the findings. You would think that if the K&N was as bad as some make it out that their sales would not be what they are. The UNI is basically the same and I have never heard anyone complain about it.
  20. Is the dying the only thing? When does it, going down the road or at idle such as stop lights and such. Does it start hard? Could be the dredded Temp Sensor (the one that goes to the ECU. Seems that one sensor causes all kinds of issues. Hopefully someone else will chime in
  21. I just replaced my AC Compressor and both belts on my 93 legacy. after a few days I started to get a squeek then turned into a constant squeel. Check out tension on the belts. I had to drop a belt size after running out of adjustment)to get my ac belt to stop squeeling.
  22. Is it a grinding noise or more of a high pitched squeel? After replacing mine, and putting on a new belt, I tighned the belt several times untill i ran out of adjustment. You may just need to tighten the belt or if you have recently changed them drop down one size.
  23. I use Jiffy Lube on ocassion here were I live and have never had an issue. Probably because I know most of them. I have heard of a few others here in the area that got nailed for not actually changing the oil and or the filter.
  24. I am not possitive but have heard that Penzoil and Quaker state produce the oil
