  1. I find myself thinking of the age old saying; "A little gas, a little oil, a little spark from the coil.' Since you have gas, and I assume oil;). Then it must be lack of spark at the right moment. Funny tho you claim that you may or may not have flooded it. Are you sure you got gas? what you have to do is eliminate one of the two. Here's my method. You will need three people, one with a stopwatch. one to turn the ignition. Leave #1 spark plug in the motor, and take the wire off. Then the third person sticks a finger as far in the boot as he can. (I find pinky works best, and dont be afraid to use spit to lubricate.) Then with the other hand hold the spark plug, and have helper #2 turn over the motor. If the guy with the stopwatch can't start the stopwatch before before you slam into the underside of the hood it's a gas problem. If this doesnt work have the other 2 guys touch you and each other, try again. If the stopwatch still works after this then you have no spark. Hope this helps. Seriously tho eliminate the fuel first. Every shade tree mechanic I know has messed up on the first timing belt change. Good luck!!
  2. Well I don't know about all this, but I had a front blow out under an extreem corner. After we pushed the car back onto the wheels, and quite a bit of starter use I drove it home on 3 tires. It was a front tire, and still use that wagon wheel to this day. My biggest concern was an unliscensed car ticket, so I drove it as fast as I could with that wheel on the shoulder. The good news is I made it. The bad news is the tire shredded the fender and the windshield washer tank. That didn't kill the car tho..... Many many roo missions later, steering went bad hit a tree. Once again no liscense plate, and had to get it home. Drove it 28 miles, mostly off road. Got home the temp guage was pegged, oil pressure was gone. I smashed the radiator, and the oil sending unit. The tree did kill the subaru, but it's memory still reamains in the form of an 88 fuel injected low range power plant in an 85 hatchback.
  3. I posted about 6 months ago about this car. I went down to florida to buy the car and drove it home to Negaunee Michigan. Well now I am moving and I have to sell it. The thing runs great when it's warm, believe it or not it doesn't even appear to leak oil. The brown paint has come thru the clear coat in a lot of places, but not a single speck of rust. The door jams are clean enough to eat off of. I know I will never get what I have into the car, back out of it. But $1,500 would take it away. Please make note of where Negaunee Michigan is before responding, because I don't have time to deliver. Drive it home, I drove it 2,100 miles sight unseen. At least i have a cool story out of it. jlarnard@hotmail.com
  4. I have an 86 Subaru GL wagon with the automatic transmission. The 4wd button is a thumb controll on the gear selector. When I push it in the light comes on, but as soon as I let the button go the light goes out. I did check and light or no light I never have power to the rear wheels. I have a Haynes manual but they don't even touch on this system. I know someone will ask, it does have matched tires. Any help would be appreciated. Jeff
  5. My old 88 gl wagon, (Rest in Peace or should I say rust in peace) used to get 26-28 mpg. But when you kept it in high range it got about 32. In 2wd it easily got 40mpg. My 86 carbed automatic wagon gets 22
  6. Already went and got it. Flew down visited family for a week and drove it home. What a rattle trap, but it made it. The choke system is useless, I have adjusted it but really don't have a clue how it is supposed to work. This is my first carb subaru. But it is all worth it to be able to crawl underneath it and say, "wow thats what that is supposed to look like." Other than a leaky battery dammage it is completely rust free.
  7. I am from the snow belt in the U.P. of Michigan. I have been a avid subaru lover for over a decade. In my time I and my friends have run many a subaru into the ground, almost to the point where there are no low rangers left up here. The ones that are here are so rusty that a good jolt will break them in 2. So now to my vision; I needed to go down to Florida anyway, so I checked eBay and sure enough there was a rust free 86 wagon, with an automatic tranny. Now tell me what other brand of car except Subaru would you even consider driving 1700 miles sight unseen. The body was everything I had hoped for, and the auto trans would encourage me to use it as a car and not a baha buggy, so I was happy. Unfortunatly the problems we have up here with our cars is not anything like what is ailing this subaru. When I push the 4wd button the light comes on as I am pushing it in but as soon as I release it the 4wd light goes out. And I did check it is not in 4wd if you hold in the button. Any suggestions? Here is some other food for thought. I have 2 88 wagons, efi and dual range, bodies are shot. Is it even possible to swap the whole powertrain out of an 88 and put it into the 86? Last question, need any parts I have 2 88s and an 86, both 88s are high/low, as is the 86. Jeff
