  1. My 92 Loyale needs a head gasket and cv boot on front side, new windshield. 145K miles on it. That's probably $1400 worth of work. I am planning to get a new car here in the near future (I'd like to get a 2005 Outback but can't wait 6 mos.) I don't know what to do about the loyale. if I put the $$$ into it to fix it, would I be able to get it back on the sale? Any thoughts? THX for the help.

  2. 96 Legacy wagon, 5 speed, 102K miles. The gears grind when downshifting to 4th & 3rd-which I do a lot of in Colorado! They also grind sometimes shifting from 3rd to 4th. These are not horrible grinds but you can hear & feel them. 2 different repair places have offered possible solutions. First is to drain out all old tranny fluid & replace it with slippery stuff called "syncro shift", and leave it there. Cost is ~$130.00. 2nd option is from the other repair shop and they'll put in some sort of fluid, I drive around for 500 miles or so & then they drain & replace w/ new tranny fluid. Cost ~$40.

    Anybody deal with this? THX

  3. I need a new car. I actually prefer the look of the Outback. However, the Forester is a bit cheaper AND has side airbags, the OB does not. Why do they make these 2 models anyway? It seems like they just cannabalize (sp?) each other's sales anyway. Yes I know the Forester has some different dimensions and is a bit smaller. Is it noticeable? I have a kid & need a bigger car, not a smaller one.

  4. I need a new car & would prob. get an Outback wagon. However, I see that the Outback will be radically changed for '05. It will be bigger I hear? Anything else? It would be nice if it is a little bigger, but of course that prob. means more $$$ too. I am wondering if anybody knows when the '05s will be out, and what the changes will be. I'd hate to spend $$$ on an 04 if the model will change. If the changes are not for the better, maybe I need to get an '04.

  5. My 92 loyale has 145K miles. Apparently it needs a new head gasket, it is leaking coolant. It will overheat if I don't keep the coolant filled up. My reliable repair shop says it will cost around $1000 to fix, they have to pull the engine, etc. Is this right? They say it is an engine "reseal job". I am disappointed about the supposed long life of subarus, and lack of long life on my loyale. My older 82 wagon went for 188K miles, no head gasket problem. I was thinking about getting a new Outback. Should I drop the $$ on this job?
