  1. sorry to correct you but the steering shaft is at a slope so its not as long as the lift, also on the 4" SJR lift the engine block is 3" tall , dont remember length but its extended less then 3" , also the swaybar shaft is a good size to use for the extension shaft material

    Hi Scott,

I was thinking just the opposite, but after drawing a quick sketch myself, I see you are right.

I tried to delete this comment, but it looks like I can only edit it.

  2. I'm also interested in a similar body style as Scott has mentioned, probably not for extreme wheelin, but I want a more recent Sube with an EJ, add a dual range tranny. Plan to modify the fenderwells for some 30+ tires and a minimum lift. Move the rear axle back a couple inches or maybe the front forward if I can make it fit and try to fit the bigger tires without having to lift it much. Basic coupe without a lot of electrical options or weight. Mostly it will be used for a DD and some minor wheelin. If the tires are too big, I might just run it on the street in low range and avoid any too steep hills or mud bogging offroad.

  3. I'm not an expert, but could those 4 long bolts be to bolt the crossmember back in after the spacer is added, because the stock long bolts would be too short to reuse?

I'm also thinking you would reuse the stock strutmount bolts, 3 on each side to bolt the strut to the lift blocks. The stock bolts are pressed in and somewhat difficult to remove from the stock strut flanges, but I have seen some people do it when they wanted to go to a larger size bolt.

  4. Nope unfortunately there will be another group buy us ever again, we just decided to give all of our subaru lift kit parts and products to Albie Smith. Hes the only one carrying the dream on, and I wish him the best of luck. If your interested in purchasing a lift I kit I will post his information in about a month. He's getting married this week and we'll be doing all sorts of other stuff during that time but when he's ready i'll post his contact information.

Thanks for the update James. I wish you both well in your future endeavers. I have enjoyed working with Albie in the past. He's a good guy to work with.

  5. Ray,

I have worked closely with Scott at SJR.

One of his top concerns is that what ever you do, it be done in a safe manner which does not result in an accident or injury as a result of modifications done to your car. His goal is to provide quality parts for you the builder, but you ultimately are responsible to make sure it is installed in a professional manner. He is fully capable of modifying a steering component and including it with a lift kit, but has purposely chosen not to take upon himself the liability for such a crucial safety part of your car.

The quick answer to your question is yes, most of his lifts are a simple bolt in installation, but to go along with Reveen's comments, there are an assortment of other small issues with your car that need to be understood and addressed and this is best done by someone with knowledge of the components affected. When you do the installation, you need to have someone on your team who understands the factors and has some small fabrication experience.

For a modification this large, an inexperieced person can not expect to drive the car into the garage, follow a step by step instruction sheet and drive back out ready to go in a couple hours.

I hope I haven't thrown cold water on your project.

    Good luck

  6. and possibly 1.5-2" wheel spacers.

Just a comment on spacing your wheels out further. It may give you more clearance on the inside, but will give you less clearance at the rear portion of your front wheel wells when turning the wheel sharp left or right. You may want to consider keeping your wheels tucked in as tight as you can.

  7. Scott,

What do you think of this idea?

Offer a deal on lift kits where all the aluminum parts are made entirely from recycled Subaru components.

I bet someone out there would think that was a cool thng to have.

    Just thinking.

Scott, I have some EA82T pistons and block halves all cleaned up and ready to be melted if your interested in them.
  8. Hi Brian,

This is Rollie, I'm Scott's Brother. The videos we have done so far, were made using Sony Vegas Movie Studio and then put on DVD using Sony DVD Architect. It seems to be pretty easy to use and has most of the features anyone would want to use when making a video or DVD.

What software are you using? We are always interested in finding out better ways to do things.

    Rollie

Have you done any DVD editing in the past? I got some software that puts out a great show when edited properly. Way easier to use then Adobe Premier. Wouldnt mind helping you if you need it.

  9. I was thinking along the lines of a '87ish wagon, with a six inch lift...some 28" tires, some lights and othere than that........thats about it...maybe a set of all terrians,...or some mudders and some street'ers.

    -Dalton

28" tires might be a little tall for offroad with the stock drivetrain and weight. You might be happier limiting your tires to 27".

87-89 were all basically the same with dual range and fuel injection. Before 87 they had carbs, after 89 they had no dual range.

  10. I'm actually putting an EJ into an EA82 Subaru, but am posting this question in the Vanagon Conversion section, with the hopes that maybe I can stir up more people who are familiar with this. (Moderators: feel free to move this post to somewhere else if you think it would be more appropriate).

My question is concerning wiring. Instead of trying to follow the complete wiring diagram as came with the engine, which in this case was a 93 Legacy, I'm looking for a simplified diagram that only includes the bare minimum devices needed to make the engine run. I'm willing to strip out what ever components I need from the donor Legacy, but don't want to take anything I can do without.

After I get some good responses, I will draw up a nice wiring schematic and post it somewhere for you all to use.

    Thanks

    Rollie

  11. OK, pretend like I dont' know where the Nooksack is. . . What area is it, or what is the area you'll be in? WA State?

Scott's family's private property near Deming Wa, which is about a 30 minute drive east from Bellingham. Nice remote location on the Nooksack River.

  12. Well, I will eventually be looking to do something like this. Closer to the car, though, and with a 2" receiver.

Actually the photo shown above is misleading as the red/blue/purple/silver car is missing it's front grill and headlight rings. Here's the same bumper on a different car. It fits fairly snug.

  13. Wow,

This thread has seemed to hit a chord with so many people who have jumped in and added their comments. In the few hours since I first read this, I've been thinking about why people become enthused with anything. I admit I have also caught the bug and have very quickly spent more money and did more work on my Subaru's then I can justify. Why?

I think enthusiasm is contagious. Other people have a huge influence on what we think and do. It may have started out as a cheap car we picked up, but as soon as we start hanging around other Sube owners or reading the posts on this website, we develop the desire to do what they do or even try to do it better then the next person. Then, before we know it, we have gone way beyond what makes rational sense.

I think in some ways it is like a cult. We develop beliefs and defend our way of thinking beyond what is truly rational. To me that is what much of the fun is all about. It doesn't have to make sense. Subarus may not be better at anything, but that doesn't really matter to me. I enjoy thinking they are.
