  1. I am trying to reassemble my engine.I didn't take it apart. (long story)

I can't locate timing mark oncrank gear.Iknow that it should be opposite the key and supposed to be a mark on crank position sensor but I cant find it.

Also is the little line on cam gear the timing mark? And on this engine (ej22t) how are the cams set. I see the mark on plastic behind cam above gear. I am comfortable with ea82 but am lost with this thing.

    Help please

  2. Car is a 94 my typo.

Engine was pumping coolant out the tailpipe.

Pulling the heads didn't show any problem. Had the heads milled but shop couldn't pressure check them. On attempting to reassemble couldn't hook up oil drain on turbo. Guy who was trying to help injured his knee and is out of business for months. I managed to injure back and am not much better. We couldn't get the turbo off to hook up hose.have considered pulling engine to access the d----mn thing but can't even do that now. Getting old and on ss makes everything even worse.

  3. Well I got it going. I rechecked timing belts and tighten them a little. Checked dist and set timing mark on flywheel to #1. put cap on and no go. to get it to start dist had to be set 180deg off??? finally after resetting dist about 3 times it suddenly fired up and purred like it should. New timing light came today so was able set ign timing. sounds good. has a cherry bomb on it. Now if only I can get legacy to run like that.

  4. The easy to get crank pulley loose is to put breaker bar with socket on and let bar handle rest against the frame then bump starter. bolt will come right off.

There are timing notches on top and bottom of rear covers. at least on my ea82 88 gl there are.

The timing kits from ebay are fine. I just found one for 50.

Getting the springs on idlers hooked up taxed my old joints a bit.

  5. Millage unk guess 170k

compression all cyl 160 or better

no backfire but a weird kind of kickback then it will start. all timing and ignition replaced and settings triple checked.

This tees me off as this engine always started easy even when temp was below freezing.

as far as the comment of flooding engine if it is it must be in controler as this is spfi.

  6. My 88gl is slowly grtting its problems resolved. Here is the latest one. It acts just like a carbed engine with no accelerator pump. Ie if you throttle with a cold engine it will quit and die. If you let up on throttle it will pick up to 1k rpm. Ne1 have something like this and resolved. (it runs fine when warm.) Here are most of what it has had done.

    timing kit

    jy fuel pump (good pressure)

    jy distributor

    new plugs and wires

    dist cap

    jy mas

coil and ignitor from member tested good.

    and it is spfi

  7. Car is an 88gl 5sp d/r

It has developed a wild problem. It idles pretty good but if you give it throttle over 2500 it sounds like a diesel with the jake brake on. I have

    checked timing belts (deadon)

put in a known good coil and igniter.

put in a known good distributor

used but good fuel pump. old one had 5lbs of pressure.

car is a spfi. Some good points I haven't tried yet.

    fuel filter

    plugs and wires.

    also tried another computer.

    no codes showing.

    Sure could use this car.

  8. Still having fun with old 88. It decided to backfire a few times then quit. life is over. Thanks to 94Loyale a good coil and igniter Got it to start but it ran terrible. Pulled the front apart and checked timing belts. All ok. Checked fuel pump and it was low pressure then all of a sudden it came up to 40lbs. Next on the agenda was the mass airflow sensor.Swap it out and ran better??? Next was to check timing and sub out disty. Ran much better. About normal for this car. One of the strange things was the plugs on left bank were all sooted up. Right bank ok. (new plugs) It never did throw any codes. I will finish putting it together tomorrow and drive it a little. I think this car has a hex on it.

  9. just when the legacy goes down the gl decides to have a fit.

Go down the road and it will buck severely. No codes???

I suspect fuel pressure. 88 spfi. I think I will see if someone has a good fuel pump setting around. Also need to change ignitor and cpu to see what happens.

  10. I do believe this is the nasties car I have worked on. Service info says heads will come off with engine in car. Left side NO WAY. Never saw so many hoses and wires. Car was pumping antifreeze out the tailpipe so hg or heads are suspected. I always gave the baddest title to the Mazda MPV awd I had.I got so mad at it I parked it for 3 mo when it blew hg. I'm going to loosen engin mounts and try to move engine over a 1/2" to try to clear left frame. If I don't find the cause of leak I may have to park it untill I find a ej22t.

    Oh Well.

  11. 88 gl wagon has been very dependable but today it got me. Was making a quick trip into town for tractor parts when all of a sudden all the lights on dash came on and lost power steering. stopped and lifted hood to find crank pulley hanging by a belt. Somehow the bolt was still in it. So I put it back together and finished my trip. I know that the previous owner had changed timing belts just before I got the engine so I guess I know who to blame. It is usually me.

  12. My 88 gl has acquired a problem. It is spfi no turbo. If it was a carbed unit I would know were to look. When you open throttle at lowspeed it hesitates. ( no accel pump)

Once it starts to go it is great. Very good acceleration. Everything looks good. hoses etc. New fuel pump, filter, plugs etc. Who knows where to look?
