  1. If this was a consistent problem at all operating temperatures, I'd say it was the flywheel. I had 3 different clutch/pressure plates installed and the flywheel resurfaced 5 times in mine before I got rid of the shudder. My shudder was detectable whenever you let out the clutch at low RPM's (or let it out to the contact point with the brake on) and also when you downshifted from higher RPM's to the point that there was compression braking. Was severe enough that I could hear the passenger bucket seat vibrating back and forth. Just something to consider as a possibility.... Did not seem to be related to the vehicle being hot or cold though....
  2. I had headgaskets, timing belt, water pump, seals, valves, plugs, plug wires, clutch package.....complete rework done at the Sube Shop for $1200. From what I've been reading on this board, that is an insanely low price...... Besides, they give excellent customer service (you can deal directly with the owner Ernie) and a warranty. It's been a year and 20K miles since they did it and I haven't had any problems! IMHO that's a much better option than busting knuckles when it's freezing out. Particularly when they do several of these a week so they know all the little tricks. (Note: this is not a paid endorsement....lol) Just happy with their work and price!
  3. The Sube Shop up on the Mileground is your best bet. I've had them do clutch/headgasket work on my Legacy OBW and have nothing but compliments for them. Don't have their number handy but they are right behind the Meineke muffler shop across from the BP station......
  4. Flywheels are separate from the clutch kit (pressure plate, disc, throwout bearing) and I'd recommend getting one from the dealer. If it's not completely true/within tolerance, then that's where your shudder comes from......
  5. Granted, mine is a 97 Legacy OB so there might be some differences, but I had exactly the same problem and the Subaru shop had to go in and pull the clutch out 6 times. They told me everything under the sun to convince me that the vibration was normal. If it's the same thing I experienced, it is the flywheel. If they don't get it resurfaced just perfectly then this is the symptom you get. If you don't trust them to keep trying to get it right, a new flywheel is almost $400 but would probably solve your problems.....
  6. Not having heard your whistle, it might not be the same as mine (97 OBW); but mine whistles under load in that RPM range and it is because the airbox doesn't seal correctly. My local mechanic says he's seen several that do this. Anytime I accelerate hard or on a hill, I'll get that whistle until I back off the gas..... Nothing to worry about - I assume it actually probably helps me repel deer!
  7. I have had this problem before but it has been because mice moved into the ductwork and built a nest/died in there. Is this a possibility where you live/keep your car? Dealer had to pull all ductwork out of my car, disinfect, etc.... Hope it never happens again because that reeked!!!
  8. Are you referring to the Sube Shop on the Mileground? Heard good things but can't find contact info. Do you know their phone number? A
