  1. it takes virtually no social skils to fly up one's own rump roast. i apologize for my insensitive, blanket remark about 10w40 oils...but i still aint gonna use it:)
  2. it does not do anything particularly well. a mechanic friend of mine swears that many of the engine failures he sees are a result of this oil's inability to do the job. routine oil changes and engines just junked up with sludge. 10w40 was created by the oil companies to bridge the gap between oils for different climate conditions, hence the "super multi-grade" distinction. stations wouldn't need to stock many different grades so it was attractive from a cost standpoint. in my opinion it's kind of like "the jack of all trades, master of none" of the lubricant world.
  3. it is the worst multi-grade oil around. 20w50 in the spring/summer and 30 wight in the fall winter. if you live in extreme cold, follow mfg recommendation but NO @#*& 10w40!!!
  4. i had a 1996 legacy wagon that had 212,000 on it and was strong as any car i ever owned. it was one of the things that 'sold' me on subaru! hope you get another 190K!!! gregg
  5. the newest 2.5 L i've owned was a 1998 and the dealer confirmed the 105k interval (i was incredulous as the longest interval i had ever heard of was 60k). i don't think it's too difficult provided you know how to work on cars. regards, gregg
  6. thanks. i'll change the fluid out. it looks o.k. and smells like trans fluid but i'm noticing some bind so i think i will change it and see if it helps.
  7. this is what i am trying to find out: i have read some posts about the screen filter, and also some about an oil filter type (newer car i think). there is a filter and pan gasket available for the year and model car i have but i want to make sure before i buy it. can i achieve the same results by just changing the fluid? thanks, gregg
  8. 95 legacy 2.2 auto trans filter or no? thanks, gregg
  9. thanks. i heard that there was a coolant additive to help w/ head gasket issues. can this be used as a preventative measure or only when a leak develops? gregg
  10. i have a 1995 legacy 2.2 and wanted to change out the coolant. is there a special type of coolant available and is it necessary? thanks, gregg
  11. i just bought a '95 legacy with the same problem. a subaru tech told me that there is no idle adjustment but cleaning the throttle body might help.. i will try that soon and post results. gregg
  12. rest of car is decent. 150k, a bit dirty but not bad. sound seems to be in the back pass side of the engine and the guy says "they all sound like that". price is $2500
  13. i'm looking at a 1997 legacy to buy and it seems to have a knock in the engine. i have read about "piston slap" but this noise remains after engine is warm. it is a 2.2 litre and my questions are these: what else could it be and do these engines have some noise issues? thanks, gregg
