  1. I know what you are saying.....and I agree....and I would agree more if Barb (yes, my Impreza is named Barb), wasn't like a 30 year old lady who has smoked half her life. She may be relatively healthy, but looks like crap! I gotta look at my image (man I hate saying that), if I am driving around customers, and traveling for work...... I was quoted $500 to have the flywheel replaced, my buddy would do it for $300. My rule of thumb is if the repair is going to be close to (or more than) 1/2 what the car is worth, it's not worth fixing I am not totally giving up on her, but have her parked for now. I was told that if I continue to drive her, and the fly wheel completely craps out.....that is where I stop.....would it do any other damage? or just leave me where I am?
  2. The torque converter was solid, no movement, just the flywheel. At this point I am going to monkey with it a little bit, but will probably end up getting rid of it. I don't know what I am doing, so I can't fix it myself, and value wise it just ins't worth it (to me) to fix. Because of the 500-600 miles I drive a week, I need something with lower miles anyway....and something more presentable for customers (or so my boss recommends ). I am trying to convince myself this is the case anyhow....I would love to fix it and continue driving it....
  3. After the responses here, and all the research I had done I was convinced it was a heat shield issue.......now I really wish it was that simple Drove the car over to a friends house, pulled into his garage over the pit. Got under the car, started tapping around and everything is solid:eek: He walks out and says "nope, heat shield is fine.........your fly wheel however is not fine" When we were able to turn the motor to check different parts of the fly wheel, some parts we could move it nearly a 1/4".:-\ Like I started this post with....I don't know much about cars...but when I am told you have to pull the motor to fix this, I know it is not good:banghead:
  4. I guess I probably should have clarified myself..... I need to jack it up so I can slide the blocks under the car, so I can slide under it It will have to be a weekend project. Thanks for all the help (and concern) so far.....I am sure I will be back after I get under the car.
  5. Thanks, that makes sense why it would do it with no acceleration. I crawled under the car best I could and tried to move the heat shields that I could see, but I could only get a little way under the car as I forgot I loaned my jack to a buddy......I guess it's time to get that back! I didn't have any leverage, but was unable to move the heat shields, but don't really know what I should be looking for as far as how much the will move. I will get it up and be able to see more tomorrow.....will just have to live with the noise for now.... and of course I am assuming this is the issue. From all the searching I have done it sounds right.... If this is the issue....and as others have said from my poor description of my other noise, I may just take it in and have a new exhaust/muffler put on and let them deal with it - although I really have no clue how much that is....
  6. Because I can't stop thinking about this, and I know I can't get anymore info for a couple hours, I have a question..... IF it is on of the heat shields (and from the research I have done on other sites, I am leaning this way too)....why would it ONLY happen when I take my foot off the gas when cruising on the freeway?
  7. best I can tell it sounds like the back of the engine area..... I will have to do so tonight at home (50 miles from work)...fingers crossed
  8. OK, just started it up, and as it was starting I could hear the noise, as the engine got down to an idle it went away (as gradual as the engine slows). As I rev the engine the noise started up when I got around 2k RPM. I feel like I am playing the game clue.....but I don't have a clue:lol: does this give anyone insight?
  9. no.....is that bad:confused: The water pump went out, and I knew enough to have the timing belt replaced since they were in there already....but obviously did not know enough...
  10. I will try revving the engine in park and see what it does. I have had the car about 4 years and the only thing I have done to it (other than oil change, air filter, etc.) is had the water pump/timing belt replaced about a month ago. will report back in a while with what I learn (or don't learn )
  11. I guess that would help huh? :-\ 1993 Impreza Wagon Automatic 4 cylinder 1.8 liter FWD 162,000 miles
  12. OK, so I know I have a few problems with my 1993 Subaru Impreza Wagon, but a new one popped up yesterday.... to start, my car is loud at all times, I have been told it is could be several things, the exhaust manifold, head gasket (but not the heads), or exhaust leak. I admittedly know very little about cars...so I am just going from what I have been told. I don't have the funds to get the noise fixed, its been like that for a couple years, besides the excess noise I haven't really noticed any performance loss and the plan has always been to drive the car until it quit for good..... Well, new noise/issue popped up yesterday that I have no clue what it could even be..... When I get over 60 mph and let off of the gas there is a grinding/rattling noise. It is very loud, but doesn't seem to affect anything as far as power/performance. If I press the gas pedal it goes away, but as soon as I take my foot off the gas it is back. Once my speed gets below 60 mph the noise is gone. My first thought was the transmission, hoping that is incorrect...the transmission has about 30k miles on it, was done about 4 years ago (20k of those miles in the past 9 months - new job requires a long commute) help?!?
  13. Thanks I'll test that out in the morning....and yes there has been snow, so you probably hit it on the head Thanks
  14. My Driver side winshield wiper has died:mad: It goes about 4 inches and then stops which causes a collision with the passenger side wiper. My first thought would be that this is the motor craping out...but I don't know. Any suggestions?
  15. Anyone here feel like helping a friend out with a carfax report?
  16. I'll work on getting a repair manual this weekend, and hopefully can get something figured out. Thanks
  17. I don't have a repair manual, funds are kind of low, but I'll check into them, any suggestions on a good/inexpensive website? I found one on Ebay for $18 dlvd. but don't know if that is a good deal or not. I don't want to sound like a cheap-skate, I was just so excited to get Sirius (Birthday was yesterday, it was a gift) and now I am a little bummed. I am just lloking for that 'quick fix' although I know they rarely exist.
  18. I have tried the ligher (of course) I tried the power adapter for the Sirius Deck, and I tried a power adapter for a disc man, but nothing Being that I don't have a test light or digi meter, would a auto parts store check that for me for free? ( I know, I know I should just do it myself) I thought I have seen ads for free electrical testing, is that what this would mean? And let me say thanks to everyone helping I really appreciate it a lot!
  19. idon't have a test light or digi meter. I'll cehck it out under the hood. Even with the horn being a saftey hazzard, my main concern is the stinkin' lighter! anyone have any ideas for me on that?
  20. There is absolutely nothing when I push the horn buttons, nothing at all. The horn and the lighter are the only 2 things that don't work in the car. I bought it from a transmission shop (my girlfriend's Dad's friend). He said that a family dropped it off to get a new transmission in it and neve picked it up after he was finished with it, he placed a lien on the title and a year later it was his ( I believe that was the timeline) He sold it to me as he had no use for it. I don't even know how to check if the horn is plugged in, is it just behind/underneath the steering wheel?
  21. I bought the car in January and It hasn't worked since I have owned it (never though to check the horn when I bough it...... I know my bad!) It has a fuse box both under the hood and under the dash. I'll try jigglin' anyone else have suggestions?
  22. I fear I have much bigger problems:eek: Changed the fuse (even though it didn't appear to be blown), I also changed the Horn fuse as the horn doesn't work, and nothing.......Am I right to assume it is an electrical problem? And correct me if I am wrong, but those are extremely expensive. Please forgive the "beginnerness" :-\ Or does anyone have any other ideas of what it could be?
  23. Alright, Last night I bought Sirius Satelite for my car, just a plug and play one so I figured this will be so easy, it'll be great. Well come to find out My cigaretter lighter does not work, so I cannot plug it in I am hoping it is just a bad fuse, so bought the fuse. Now do I just pull the fuse and isert the new?
  24. My problem wasn't with the lever where the turn signal is, it was with the damn switch on top of the steering cloumn. It is hard tell whether the switch is in the on or off position. Still my fault, but confusing. Are all Subarus wired so the lights turn off when the car is off?
