  1. HAHAHA! Yeah no doubt, crazy meth heads are up all night and day tweakin. Speaking of meth heads, they just found the missing remains of a 47 year old woman like 2 miles from my house I think. Way out in the boondocks on some weyerhauser property. And to top it off, a kid who was a senior last year at my school and his cousin were the ones who kidnapped and shot her! That's nuts. And last week about 12 miles from my house they had a hostage standoff for 14 hours because a guy got mad that his girlfriend was leaving him so he shot her in the hip and the knee and one bullet grazed her temple! Then she got away with one of their children leaving behind a 3 year old I think. He eventually let the kid go and then in the morning he came out shooting his pistol and they shot him dead. What's happened to the world these days...
  2. $20 bucks for that exact one at autozone. I needed this when I replaced my snapped timing belt. You can "rent" it from autozone for $20 and if you don't bring it back it's yours and if you do you get all your money back. Autozone has got your back. I just bought mine. Screw bringing it back!
  3. Excellent! I'm glad it's hitting the right marks. I'm very impressed with this car. My first subaru, I don't think I'll ever own a car that isn't all wheel drive...I have a 4WD toyota pickup too and I love that thing as well. When I got the car it had been majorly neglected. The second day I had it the timing belt snapped on me while I was passing a car and a truck pulling a huge horse trailer. That was embarressing. Died on me right before I got past the last of them and I had to just coast to a stop while letting them pass me. It was totally lame. After that probably a couple weeks later or less the tranny took a dive. I was going up this hill to my house(very steep hill and very tall)when it seemed to have lost power and so I gave it more gas but nothing happened. I came to a stop and rolled back down the hill a bit. I don't know what happened with the tranny but it had almost 300,000 on it and it had enough fluid so I just replaced it. I also did other small things like new fuel filter, oil/filter change, new plugs and wires from NGK, new O2 sensor, new knock sensor, new air filter, replaced many broken interior parts, brand new all season tires plus a couple spare studded snow tires! Also had to replace the rear end because the gears that came with the new tranny are 4.111 and the original had 3.90. And both the driver side wheel bearings! All this in the first month I had it pretty much. But after all that, it runs like a top! It shows no sign of slowing down either. Oh yeah, new ignition switch and locks to match. We had to break the ignition to get the car from the people who had it before. Meth heads. Long story.
  4. 90 Legacy Wagon 4EAT 23 mpg the last two tanks I was wondering if this was a pretty decent city/highway average. That's just the last two tanks but keep in mind I drive pretty spirited, I'll say. I got 285 miles on 12 gallons and then 267 on 11.6 gallons so it's about 23 on the last two tanks. I just started checking to see what kind of milage I'm getting. I searched legacy mpg and came up with nothing so that is why I'm asking. I have no idea how many miles are on the engine but the tranny is a 94 that I put in a couple months ago with 120,000 on it and the engine I'm assuming is somewhere between 120-150K. With 275,500 on the car...lol she runs beautifully. Especially after I just replaced that cracked knock sensor, changed oil and filter and ran a can of sea foam through the pcv and the gas tank. I'm just trying to see how my baby is comparing to other people's wagons.
  5. Oh yeah, totally. DO NOT pour seafoam in your pcv hose without first removing it and the valve and cleaning them out!! I almost did but I noticed that it looked pretty dirty. I found out it had a really thick buildup of crap inside it and the valve was almost clogged with crap. I used to seafoam and a screwdriver to clean it out and then put it back on and poured the seafoam in! It killed it instantly. I didn't even put it in fast at all. I found that I had to keep a good 2K RPM via hand on throttle while I did it just to keep the engine alive. It just wanted to die. Mass smoke too. I wish I could have gotten a picture. My mom was like, look at all that smoke! And I'm like, it's alright mom, it's supposed to do that lol.
  6. Seafoam worked pretty good. I just got home from work, it seems a bit smoother but what impressed me wasn't even what I had expected at all. Up until I put the seafoam in I thought my tranny had issues. It was take forever to engage from a stop. The car was hesitant and I thought for some reason the tranny was the problem. I guess I was wrong. After the seafoam I noticed that it engages right away. So when I push the accelerator in at a dead stop it just goes now. Instead of before I always had to wait a second and feel it engage and then go. Now it's ready to go right off the bat...the way it should be! I'm gonna go buy some more of this stuff and put it in my truck. The knock sensor will be going in this weekend. I called the dealership and "about 35 dollars" will get me an oil change and the stuff they inspect with that is your wipers(they're new), fluids(they're fine), tires(new too), ehaust(I know it's perfectly alright)might need new cats almost 300,000 miles on them babies! Also they would lube my suspension. Which is the only thing I would benefit from so I'll just do the oil change myself.
  7. Yep, looks like a blown HG to me! Right between the cylinder and the coolant passage. That's pretty much how my HG looked after I blew it in my Toyota pickup. It slowly deteriorated over time though. One day I just started it up and drove it a few blocks, pretty slowly to the store. Got back in it and went to leave and all sorts of white smoke came out and it died. That sucked.
  8. Looks good, I like that bumper a lot as well as the fog lights. You are lucky to have so much space in your garage. I can't even get my car in the garage without moving a bunch of crap and that would take forever and still I wouldn't have much room to work if I got it in there. And it wouldn't fit the whole car anyways. Sheesh...
  9. Put the seafoam in today via the PCV vavle. I noticed that the hose and the metal connector that it screws into were all gunked up with dried black stuff. It was pretty bad. I decided it would be a good idea to remove these and clean them out before pouring the seafoam in and letting all that crap run into my engine. I began to scrape it out of the hose with a screw driver and it was coming out like a chimney! Jeez. Once I got all I could out, I put the hose back onto the threaded(valve? but not back into the manifold!)and poured some seafoam in it and shook it around in there. Then I poured it out and it was really nasty. Then I blew it all out with an air hose. I replaced the stuff and let the car warm up again(I had it all warm and ready to go when I pulled the hose off and realized how gross it was)and then I began to very slowly pour it into the hose. It died. Almost immediately. I had to give it like 2000 RPM the whole time to keep it running and it put out A LOT of smoke lol. Some people said it's a smoke show, others said not much happened. When I did it, it was a whole hell of a lot of smoke. I drove it probably 2 miles(after letting sit for 10 minutes)before it quit smoking. Conclusion: I think it runs a little smoother and quieter and a LITTLE bit more responsive. I'm pleased with the results, even though they're not very noticable. For 7 bucks it was worth it for sure. The thing is, it never ran bad. It was just a bit hesitant. I think I need to drive it more in the city to see if it really helped. The "spirited drive" I took it on was like 50-80mph back country roads so it was hard to tell if it's still hesitating because that happens mostly from stop and go stuff. I will not be putting it in the oil, although I'd like to. I don't want to risk oil leakage. I just don't have time to deal with that at the moment. But I'll put the other half of the can in the tank when I fill it up. Thanks for everything.
  10. Alright, well I got the seafoam today, 7 bucks at autozone. It was on sale. Is that a good price? When I walked in a guy greeted me and I asked him if they carry it and he told me no and another guy said yeah we do it's right over there. The guy who told me they didn't have it was impressed and told me it was some good stuff and he was suprised they had it. Anyways, I'm gonna call up the dealership in the morning and see what they charge, plus how much they'll put in my knock sensor for, if it's too much I'll just do it myself.
  11. Yeah that's what I said. I didn't say they goofed up, I just said they didn't tell me that it has hydraulic lifters.
  12. Alright, well I do plan on driving this car quite a bit. Especially in the winter when I go snowboarding. That's like 4 hour round trip each time and I go every weekend. That's not including driving to work and college. So that said, which seals usually go out(if they go out)and how difficult is it to replace them? The thing is, if it's going to be too time consuming I don't think I'll put it in the oil because I really have almost no time to do anything right now. On the other hand, I think I need to check some seals anyways because there's oil on the bottom of the engine and it looks like it's either coming from the valve covers or the front of the engine. I never have to put any oil in it so it must be a very slow leak. This car needs some help and I wish I had more time to nurture it.
  13. I am going to change the oil in my 90 Legacy L Wagon auto and I want to run some seafoam through it. I just put a bottle of STP fuel system cleaner in it today so should I stick the seafoam in it for the next tank or don't bother? Anyways, I'm going to put the seafoam through the PCV or the vacuum line, whatever and also in the oil before I change it. Drive it for a couple days and then change the oil probably on friday. I'm considering synthetic oil as well. Should I replace the oil with synthetic right after putting the seafoam in or should I put regular oil in it one more time to make sure I get all that crap out of there before I put expensive oil in it? I've never used synthetic so I was wondering which brand, maybe how much to expect$$$, anything else that I should know before I do this. I'd really like to be able to rely on this car and I know it's been neglected by the previous owner, I just don't know how bad. I'll also be replacing the knock sensor on friday. It seems to run good, except it's not very responsive and especially not since I got a knock sensor code a couple weeks ago and then it went off.
  14. Oh, well it would be nice if the book pointed that out. Maybe it does actually but I didn't see it. I just looked in the index and went to the page for valve adjustment and it just said 97 and later models and that's it! From there it went on to explain the steps on doing it and totally didn't say anything about that. Good 'ol haynes for ya! Always got your back.
  15. Pickup a sensor at autozone on the way to work today. Ran me like 70 bucks. Damn that sucks. I just spent my whole (paid weekly) paycheck that I got yesterday by this afternoon. Sad. Anyways, I have wednesday, friday, saturday and sunday off this week! HAHA that's cool, kind of sucks because it's only like 27.5 hours instead of close to 40 but oh well, I'll enjoy it I'm sure. So I guess I won't be putting the sensor in til then. Another question comes to mind. I want to change my oil. I'd like to do it at the same time. Should I do it myself or let the dealership do it for me this time? I have never paid anyone to change my oil before but I think they do other things along with it, right? What all do they do? Check fluids, um anything else? Is it worth it to have them do it vs. doing it myself, that's what I'd like to know. I think my tranny needs flushing too but that'll have to wait a while.
  16. I was thinking about adjusting my valves on my 90 legacy L wagon auto 2.2. I have an 89 Toyota pickup and I adjusted the valves on it and it ran way better and took care of the fluctuating idle that it had and I don't know the history of this subaru at all. For all I know, it's never had any maintanence! It's got 275,000 miles on it and the motor is not the original. I don't know where they got that engine from, nor do I have a clue as to what the miles are on it. I pretty much know nothing, aside from the stuff I've done to it. Replaced tranny with 94 auto 120,000 miles, rear end from same car, all new belts including timing belt because it snapped on me the second day I had it. Oil change, new fuel filter, new tires. That's about it. I was looking in this haynes book(haynes sucks I know)for my car and it has valve adjustment, but it says for 97 and later models...What the hell does that mean!? The book says it's for 90-98 Legacys! That's all it has. So what about my 90? The procedure looks exactly the same as on my Toyota and it's very simple. Should I go for it and adjust them to the specs for the "97 and later models"?
  17. 90 Legacy L Wagon 4WD Auto I was driving to work today and I don't have a stereo at the moment so I had my big headphones on (I'm sure this is illegal and I don't care lol) and I was listening to my iPod when all of the sudden I heard this loud pop. I immediately took the headphones off and listened for a while. I thought my rear tire blew out! Nope, it's fine. After a minute or two I figured it must have backfired for some reason (has never happened before) and began listening to tunes again. Well after another minute or so it did it again. This time I turned the iPod off and set it aside the rest of the way to work. It didn't do it again and it didn't do it on the way home tonight either. I never got a good hearing of it because both times I was listening to music and I don't listen to my music very quietly. But I know it was me and I felt it in the seat when it happened. Probably a couple weeks ago my CEL was on when I started up my car and for a couple times when I started it up but not for long. I pulled the code and it was a knock sensor code. It was still on after that but went off later that day while driving it and it hasn't come on since. So I haven't done anything about that. I was wondering what would make it backfire? If, that's what it was. Could it be that my timing sucks because my sensor is dead? I also noticed that ever since that CEL popped up the thing has hesitation when I start it. When I turn it on it takes forever to go. Like I give it a good deal of gas when I put it in drive for the first time and try to go, it hesitates for about a good second and a half and then goes but not very responsively at all. It takes a few seconds to wake up now.
  18. ewww...I don't like the wing. In fact, I don't like the car at all. It looks like a wrx/celica mix that went horribly wrong.
  19. Sweet thanks, I drive up a big steep hill to get home each day. It's about 3/4 of a mile up at like 20-35 degree inclines. So I'll try that out because if I want to get up to about 50mph I have to give it a lot of gas and it downshifts and revs to like 5k or higher before shifting or I have to accelerate really slowly to avoid that.
  20. Now that I know how the sensor works it makes perfect sense. It wasn't that I didn't trust them it was just that I didn't understand the situation. I thought it was a code for engine knock and not that the sensor had quit sending the signal. Thanks, I'll check it out as soon as I get a chance. Which may not be til tomorrow because I have school and I go straight from there to work and from work I go home at 12:30 at night and go to bed and do it all over again at 7:30 the next morning. Tight schedule.
  21. I recently bought a Legacy Wagon L and it's an auto. The first car I've had that was automatic. It's got this little button on the shifter that says manual and if you press it a little light will come on that says manual below my guages. What I wanted to know is, exactly what does this button do for me? I was thinking maybe for some reason you would like to shift your automatic like it was a manual and pushing that button makes it easier on the tranny? Not that I wish to do that but that's all I've come up with lol. Also my first Subaru. These are interesting cars.
  22. OOOHHH! I have been meaning to ask about my defrost situation. The heat does not work in mine. Well it's pretty much stuck on def/heat and I think just plain def works too. It's a 90 Legacy Wagon L and it has the push buttons too. If I try to push anything other than def/heat or def it just makes this clicking sound like it's trying to move something inside the dash near the left side of all the heater buttons but it never stops and the heat never comes out the vents. So I just leave it on def/heat and it'll come out the def vents on top of the dash and the rear defroster and down by your feet but that's it. No heater vents. Is it jammed? Should I tear apart the dash like a madman and while I'm at it, roll my tach back to 130,000 miles(from 274,000)because that's what's on the replaced engine, tranny and rear end. I hate stuff in the dash. Oh and while I'm at it(if I ever get time for that)I'll locate that stupid rump roast noise that beeps when the door is open and I'll clip the wires to it. NICE!
  23. Wait, so how do you know it's not knocking? What makes you just assume it's fine and the sensor is bad? I can easily replace it but I don't want to replace it if it's actually tellings me something. But on a later note, halfway to work the CEL turned off. I haven't checked the computer to see if it's still saying the knock sensor code. Maybe I'll buy a sensor, we'll see.
  24. I hopped in my 90 Legacy Wagon L today and I noticed the check engine light was on. Not cool. I hate that light. lol. So I plug in the test connections and I get a 22 which I looked up on the internet to be a knock sensor. So my question is, what are the causes of a knock? Aren't they something like timing, fuel mixture, valve adjustment? Um are any of these correct? Any others?
  25. Yeah, I swear to god you can't do that. It says not to put it near anything like any living things, or electronics. Why would they sell it? If it's that harmful, where would you put it that it wouldn't be harming something or someone? It also says, "no suing" over by the availability on the right side of the page. That's the sketchiest thing I've seen for sale on the internet and I'm not buying one.
