Well I'm thinking about buying another car, I am hopefully going to look at it tomorrow the fellow lives in Reading, so what should I look out for, it looks very clean, inside and out, the engine is really clean from the pictures. The price is as stated $4000 included is about $800 of car stereo gear that is about 4 months old. Thanks for all your help, Jay.

Well I got a price of $1100 for a supposed JDM engine that has been pressure and leak tested, the engine is $650 and the install $350-400. Is this a good price, the warranty is for 3 months which seems sort of short to me. Can anyone recommend a good place for this in or near philly. Thanks I'm hoping to have this done next week. Jay. -
Well you guys have helped me out before and I would appreciate some more help. Took my car in which has been sitting for about 2 months to find out what happened, it is a 98 impeza L. Well the timing belt broke so did a couple pulleys and the tensioner needs to be replaced. Place wants about $750 for repairs $300 for labor $450 for parts however they say they can't guarentee that there won't be other problems with the engine from the timing belt break, ie valve damage. When it happened I was in a parking lot, car wouldn't start finally started made a lot of noise got it home about 1/2 mile parked it and left it alone except to try and start it a few times. Should I put the money into this car, should I buy another car, try and swap the engine?? I really need to make a decision because I start a new job next Tuesday and need a vehicle or will have to rent one. I look forward to hearing your opinions. Jay.

This is from Edmunds, I didn't know the color so i guessed and my zip code and yours will probably amount to a different figure. National Base Price $4,462 $5,540 $6,662 Optional Equipment $0 $0 $0 Color Adjustment Dark Blue $-4 $-5 $-6 Regional Adjustment for Zip Code 19136 $-97 $-120 $-144 Mileage Adjustment 70,000 miles $568 $568 $568 Condition Adjustment Average $-1,152 $-1,404 $-1,643 Total $3,777 $4,579 $5,437 private trade-in retail party I used the average option as far as condition is concerned, if you drop it to rough which it is probably closer to, considering the interior it would be $4,450 retail, so yeah I think he is high. Try printing this out for yourself from the edmunds.com site and bring it to the dealer see what he says . It always amazes me how they react when as a consumer you are well versed on prices and pricing. Hope this helps. Jay.

My other subie really has no part in this decision, I am keeping it of course as my wife and I drive it quite a bit. It would be nice to have 2 cars available as there are times one of us would like to go elsewhere but cannot unless we bum a ride. Thanks for the info, I was already thinking about the clutch as I had to replace the one in my current sube at 110k I am familiar with how they feel when they are getting ready to go. Thanks again, Jay.

Ok I have 1 96 impreza ob 131k runs like a champ, I feel this car stil has tons of life left, just did lots of the majors as far as service have only the timing belt, water pump, and seals to do. Now I have an opportunity to purchase for $500<maybe even cheaper> a 96 impreza in this condition It's a awd hatchback it has 189000 miles I have driven it 80 miles day for the last couple of yrs no problem. The car is 5 speed. It has good inspection through 12/06. It needs new front brakes and a tune up. I just replaced the muffler system. It also has one busted shock on the front passenger side. here are some pics. Now what I want to know is if I put the money out for the car and put some money into, fix the shock, replace the filters, spark plugs, wires, tires, etc will I be able to depend on a vehicle with that high mileage for at least 2 years or so. I understand no one here has a crystal ball just looking for a reasonable estimation as to when these things die. Now I know from my current ride that I feel 200k is very doable, how much past that will these go if I bring it up to spec. Thank you, I greatly appreciate the helpfulness of this community and I really enjoy my subie. Jay.

Hello again, I have a problem with a 98 subaru impreza l, it has 166k, a while back I ran into some problems with the engine http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59570 That's the link to my original post, anywho I would like to try to get this vehicle back on the road so if your a mechanice in or around Philly or if you know of a good sube mechanic please let me know. Also I was wondering if I where to buy an earlier year ej22 engine, like say a 96 would it be a straight up swap, no having to fiddle with the connections?? Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give, you guys have always been great. Jay.

Well I have a 96 Imp OB, and I have had the boots torn since I bought the car with 103k, I currently have 125k and have not heard a click yet, and yes I have listened and haven't heard a click. When they start clicking I will replace it immediately but as yet, no clicking or problems of any kind. Jay.

Ok the spare is full, I want to try and put a full size spare in but I don't think I have the room in the cavitiy, I do have a tire in really good shape would just need the rim. Forgot to mention the wipers where replaced about 1k ago, back wiper a few days ago. We have a freshly installed Sony stero that plays, mp3, wma, cd's, etc, it even has an input for our mp3 player to play directly from that. If I can scrounge the money I want to get 4 new POLK DB650 speakers but will see, the wife is giving me some small whining about that, she wants to buy sewing stuff . Thank you all for your sage advice, maybe we'll post some pics when we get back, thanks again. Jay and Yolie.

Well we are about ready to go on our vacation to Mount Desert Maine, which is very close to Arcadia National Park. It is going to be about 1500 miles round trip from Philadelphia and back with some possible stops along the way. Anyway we just completed the following on the vehicle Changed 4 Tires 4 Struts Left front ball bearing 4 spark plugs, NGK Iridium Fuel Filter Air Filter Oil Filter and Oil Added Gas Treatment PCV valve Well anything else we should do before we leave which is July 29th, Timing Belt and all was hopefully done at 60k, do not have repair history, plus I don't have the $$ presently to do it. Top and bottom hoses are a little mushy and thinking about replacing them everything else seems to be working well. With the exception of the Catalytic Converter Protector being bent and making some annoying noise at higher rpm.

Ok I was coming home just a bit ago and the car seemed to be running rough , pulled into a bank to tap mac, turned the car off, went back about 1 minute later and the car wouldn't start. Finally started but ran very rough, drove home about 1/2 mile or so, pulled into the driveway and that was it. Car stalled out and now when I try to start it, it doesn't crank, it makes a noise like it normally would when you start it but no crank. I'm figuring my timing belt broke, it has 166k on it I was told the belt was replaced at 105k but apparently that was not true. How can I go check to see if that is actually the problem, could it be anything else? If that is it there is a guy from the SVX forum who will replace it for me what parts do I need, as he told me to source my own parts. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

I actually have 2 I would like to have some work done on in time Number one: 1996 Subaru Impreza Outback 2.2l this is a car we are stuck on, we really like it and we are probly going to keep this car for a while, 123k purchased last april with 103k replaced the clutch, tires, brakes. Car needs: Timing belt and all the stuff that goes with Axles to be replaced in front both sides because of split boots Numer Two: 1998 Impreza L 166k, nice car rides nice we are considering parting ways. Car needs: timing belt gig could probably be done but may have been done at 105k Wheel making that annoying noise Some other stuff I would like to have done on both as funds become available, also I may have a contact to get genuine Subaru parts from the corporate distribution center for a lot less than stealerships charge, unsure just yet how much I can get it's a tenuous relationship. I know I can get some just not sure how much. Thanks a bunch, you guys are always very helpful. Jay

Hi, I live in NE philadelphia and I am looking for either a good mechanic looking for some extra work or a repair shop that knows subaru's well, we have used a father and 2 sons for a number of years but they just flat out admit they don't know subies, oil changes, breaks fine, otherwise. Anyway I had them look at the brakes and they said the pads where fine front and back but I am getting a not very loud whistling type sound from the drivers side front wheel area, sound goes away when the brakes are applied. I would also like a new set of spark plugs and maybe wires. Thanks a bunch, Jay.

Hi, Welp we have a 98 Subaru Impreza L with 163k, I purchased it with 159k put the rest on in about 1.5-2 months with 0 problems. So today I'm tooling around and I start hearing this high pitch whistling coming from the drivers side tire area, when I hit the brakes hard it stops until I get going again. I was a little rough on her this afternoon but nothing excessive before I started hearing this permanent whistle, seems I may have heard some type of noise earlier just didn't realize. Ok I have no expertise at all really but I'm guessing maybe a wheel bearing?? I would greatly appreciate it if someone with some knowledge could clue me in on what to check or replace. Jay

Ok so I find a lady who is selling a 95 Legacy for 2k, I call her and find out that the car has a problem with overheating, she has driven it and it has overheated she couldn't be more specific about how long etc, or how hot. Anyway the car recently had a water pump and timing belt installed and it seems whoever did the job did it poorly since she has had these problems only since the timing belt, etc was done. After talking to her I believe I can walk away with the car for $250-500 or in that ballpark, she was unaware of the possible head damage etc that could have occured. Ok so my questions Should I buy the car? If I do what type of repairs are in order now, or should I just buy another engine and do it that way. My basic dilema is, can I salvage this engine and repair it for a reasonable sum, or should I try and get another engine, or should I steer clear. Any help and opinions appreciated, and I would like to take a minute to thank everyone who has helped me with all of my stuff this far, your help has been invaluable. God Bless.

Well I hope someone else will chime in with what was actually done but.. Right before I had mine done I took it in to have it looked at and he fiddled with something under the hood about 3/4 of the way back center and he told me I didn't have much play left but it would give me some room which it did I had the car done the following week, hope this helps.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, better budget for a new clutch. Let me preface what I say by saying I have very little automotive knowledge. However I own a 96 Outback with 125k, when I was at about 105k I would get this smell and also a lack of power. It will get worse, you will not be able to adequately keep up with traffic, you will feel like your driving on 1 cylinder or something, same thing happened to me and $600 later the problems left and haven't come back. Hope this helps.
