  1. For the reccord, nowhere in my write up does it mention the need or use of a cat.

I was just checking cuz my car has a cat. after the spfi install the car seems to run a little rich, i smell a hint of gas so i was going to take the cat out and see if it changed but i was told that the computer might need it or something with the o2 sensor i dont know. but ill just take it out. thanks

  2. Check the coolant temp sender. Mine had a similar problem since it was installed. Unplug it and see if it returns to normal idle if it does find a replacement. As an afterthought is your gas mileage not quite what you expect? If not that is probably the culprit barring vac leaks.

Well i filled the gas tank to see my new mileage and so far its getting pretty good, with this high idle thing, so im expecting a little better after i figure out the idle problem, but ill check the coolant temp sender. thanks

  3. I just did a spfi swap on my 86 hatch, runs great except for when i stop at a red light or stop sign ect... the rpms rise to about 2800 rpms and holds till i take off. and then runs fine and when i stop same thing. its very frusterating cuz i cant afford it to be burning gas like that. and i dont know much bout spfi, ive checked: for vaccum leaks there are none, timing is good, and idk what to do

    Thanks

  4. so i unplugged and took out the egr solenoid valve but the ecs light on my dash stays on and i still get a code, is that going to put my car in like limp mode? is there a way to by pass is so the computer thinks it is still there and i wont have the code??

    Just wondering

    Thanks

  5. I have just finished my first spfi swap on my ea81, she runs but doesnt run right seems like bogging down when you drive it. i checked and am getting code 34 which is the "EGR solenoid valve" i have an 86 GL 4x4 hatchback. the donor car was an 89 GL wagon 4x4. i pulled one off a subaru i just bought that is FI same year and everything as the donor car she has bad head gaskets so i dont know if that one worked in the first place but neither worked. any body know whats going on??

    Much Thanks

  6. I bought a 1982 subaru GL wagon for a good price the guy said he just replaced the clutch and it ran for a little bit then stopped and never could get it turned over again. so he sold it to me for a good price and i didnt trust his work cuz it ran before he replaced the clutch he said for since he had it but anyhow, i droped the tranny and found this.

the pressure plate teeth work bent and missing the throw out bearing was ate and the throw out bearing shaft was ate as well. oh and he gave me the clutch and everything that he took out of the car. so i compared and its noticebly different. so i took it in to the parts house and they said that for the 1982s they have a late 70s clutch so i bought one threw it in there and SHE IS ALIVE:banana:

just figured i would do some show and tell

  7. one of my friends has a 2000 outback i dont know as much about the newer subarus as i do the older, but he was telling me that his engine just went out i asked questions. he said the car just stoped the engine wouldnt run. so he went to do an compression test and said that one side of the engine was getting compression and the other side wasnt niether cylinder. what would cause no compression on one side??

    Thanks

  8. Thanks, I Kind of figured. but was checking, looked easy but I didnt want to get into it and find out like you say a head ache and all.

    Thanks

EA82s are the same 4-lug pattern as your EA81. 5-lug is a lot of work and money (and headache....rare parts, and custom ones for EA81s) just for wheels.

you'd be way better off going 6-lug. either modify the hubs yourself, or have a shop do it (SJR will do it for a pretty reasonable price.....or at least he did the last time I looked).

or keep an eye out here for pugs. they're a direct bolt-on in 14 and 15".

  9. will any ea82 hubs fit my ea81 with minimal or what ever modification?I have an 86 GL hatchback 4x4, i want bigger wheels does anyone know if i can swop hubs for the 5 lug or anything and how easy it would be ? just trying to figure out a way for bigger tires with out having to drill and everything?:-\ I went to the u pull its today to get a look but wasnt sure what to do or if my head was even on straight :D

    Thanks

  10. Just did the 5 speed install and lengthened the drive line in my 84 Brat.

They installed new universals (with zirc's), spun balance etc... Price was about $230.

I am pleased with the one piece as it was simple with no mods for the center support.

Another board member recommended I call the drive line specialist's in Portland because they got a great deal, which didn't happen for me as I got a similar bid + shipping= $250. Others got quotes for $160 at their local shops for just lengthening (new tube and 2 welds) but my local drive line people said my universals were too worn and wouldn't spin balance if used.

I know this didn't answer your question but I thought I would throw some prices out there for comparison.

Yeah my quote is $204. its in the shop now

  11. is that stock config that has one piece driveline? i've often thought about getting a one piece shaft made for my XT6 - but didn't know if this is bad mojo. like too much stress or it would wobble or have play that damages the trans input ?

the 2 piece joints aren't "replaceable" ujoints, but they are replaceable. confused yet? let me explain.

the stock joints are staked in ujoints and are not meant to be replaced. but rockford makes a replacement ujoint for them. with a bit of careful work you can swap out the stock joints for rockford joints and once you're done they are replaceable. i have a shaft i did that too.

they guy said as long as the drive line isnt directly straight and level from the rear end to the tranny( that causes viberation) it has to have some degree of an angel not to steep but not to flat, if that makes sense. Im doing the 4spd 4x4 to 5 spd 4x4 swop and didnt know which drive line to use so i took them in and they guy said the one peice because the u joints.

  12. I took my one peice drive line out of my ea81 86 hatch in to the shop to see about getting it lengthend and i was curious about the 2 peice from the wagons, and asked the guy which he would recomend, he said the one peice because the u joints are replacable??? the 2 peice the joints are not replacable, is this true?

    SS:-\

  13. So I am doing the 4spd 4x4 to the 5 spd 4x4 in my hatch, its an 86 GL ea81, so I have went step by step down this list http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49952 but i have made it down to step 20. transfer timing marks to ea82 flywheel if neededhow exactly do I tell if the marks need to be transfered I lined up the bolt holes and the timing marks did not line up. How would I transfer them if they needed to be transfered?

    Thanks
