Are ebay timing belts any good?
glfarnes replied to glfarnes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I decided on the Gator Backs. I got them for a hundred bucks, which isn't too bad. Thanks for all the input. -
For shame on Honda sucks . I really do know what you mean though, and I was going stock on the motor anyway. Just looking for some cool looks (does that make sense) and not so much power. The older brother wrecked his four times last winter, so I'm way ahead of you on the power issue. I just finished putting a new front on that one. :-\ What the heck is an EJ22T anyway?? Sounds like the cartrige no. on my printer. I think maybe I'm grinning too much.  Jerry

I just pulled the next wreck into the garage. It's another Loyale wagon, and I'm going to build it into something for my 15 year old. It has a good interior and that's about it. The engine is shot and I have another hanging in the garage to replace it. It's a blank slate, so I'm open to any and all suggestions, so help me build one for the kid!! Jerry

I checked at the local parts place and they want around 200 bones for a set of timing belts and tensioners for the EA-82. I can get a PCI set for $60 on ebay or Goodyear for $100. What's the diff? Which set would you all buy? Jerry

Just a note of thanks to all that helped on this. The outcome at this pint is a little odd. I hooked up a horn and started running down the system. Honk. Honk. I get to the headlight plug and didn't expect anything, as I'm sure none of you did either, but it honked. I put the headlight back in and the problem was gone. I'm sure that it's just for now, but impossible to find a problem that isn't there. I'm moving on to another project, as I've bought two more vintage rigs. Again, thanks to you all. Jerry

Dearon, What I meant, is that with the switch opened up and the headlights on, that there is no power between the tab that powers the right headlight and ground. The system is hot all the time, so there should be twelve volts there. It looks like the holiday is going to stop any "fun stuff" this weekend, so I may have to get back to it monday.:-\ I know what I have to do now. I just have to get permission from the "boss" to do it. I think you guys are all too young to know how that is.

Update on the update I have now covered all of the components and found that they appear to be good. That includes relays fuses and switches. Tomorrow I will either start with a horn and use that method to check between components (who said to do that? I don't remember now) or jumper between and find the bad wire if that's the problem like cougar thinks. There is no power on the right headlight tab in the switch. Another strange happening is that the parking lights came on and I had to pull the fuse to get them to go off. I know I'm getting close, and really appreciate all the help from you guys.:-\ Jerry ps I just bought a banged up 91 to play with when I'm done with this one!!:-p

Update I found the last relay jammed up against the computer and got them all out using a mirror. All the relays are good and the power is normal at the relays, and on through the fuses. I have a really poor diagram, but from what I can tell at this point the ground on the right headlamp must be bad at the switch. I can't think of anything else it could be, since this is a ground to light system. I'll have to wait until after work again tomorrow to check the switch and will keep you all posted. My wife tells me that there are several other Subarus running around the village with the same problem If I figure this out I bet I can win some bets!! Jerry

I got to the relays and what I found were three good relays. There is one with a green plug and If pulled both lights go out. The other ones are white and blue and both good, but don't do anything for the headlight problem. I rechecked the fuses, and if I pull the right one out nothing changes. If I pull the left one both lights go out. This seems to varify that the right side has limited or no power getting to it and what is there is coming from the left side. This just gets better all the time!!

I just tried to get a paw up in above the fuse box, and I can't. How exactly do you get to the relays. The one I got spares from had the dash torn apart, and I'm thinking that I don't want to go there if I don't have to. Jerry

I have just gone over the voltage situation again. The dim side does have lower voltage, and when the bright lights are turned on the load increases and the light (Right side) gets even dimmer. I cannot find the relays on this one. I took a bunch off a wrecking yard rig last year and they were dangling down behind the fuse box. On this one there is a little yellow relay back there, but I don't see the silver ones. Jerry

Wow!! I feel like I stuck my fingers in a hornets nest here. The fuses are good. I am trying to find the ground, and I will swap out the relays tonight. Geeze guys, calm down:grin: it's one of the three and I'll be letting you know within a day or so. Jerry

My Loyale has one dim headlight and I'm at a loss to the reason. I can swap them back and forth and the problem stays on the pass. side. The voltage is good, so I'm thinking a ground problem, but I'm not sure where to look and the wiring diagram that I have doesn't really show where the ground is.

1990 Loyale wiring problem
glfarnes replied to glfarnes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I found the problem, after several hours of wire tracing and a fax from the Subaru dealer full of diagrams. The problem was that a connector that is right below the steering column had come loose. I followed the wires from both ends and it was my wife that actually pointed out that it had to be the connector. Here I am with egg on my face. I never did find the headlight relays. Does anyone know where they are located? Jerry -
Hello all, I'm new to this forum and new to Subaru. I'm trying to fix an odd problem on my son's '90 Loyale. The wipers, headlights, and heater all quit working. The fusable links are all four good. The fuses are all good, but no power is found on any of these three fuses. Does anyone know where to start on this problem. Does anyone have wiring diagrams?
