  1. Found cruise control parts from a 2000 Impreza. Are they going to work with my 98? Thanks!
  2. I was going to say what he said! I've got an unneeded ashtray in my car and could use the extra cubbie space after i take both those din spaces for electronics
  3. It's not the catch point I'm worried about so much since it's brand new and catches pretty low. What's annoying is the fact that the pedal still comes up more than twice as high as the brake. My legs are long and this is uncomfortable to say the least. It's also hard to use any amount of finesse. I just want to adjust the throw so that it's down nearer where it should be. I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to be at about the same level with the brake, right?
  4. I found this set of instructions to adjust the throw of the clutch pedal posted in an old thread on NASIOC.com. Will it work on my 98?
  5. The new clutch on the Impreza is going to take some getting used to. The clutch grabs when the pedal about even with the brake pedal, but the clutch pedal still goes through the full throw. My friggin knee is next to the steering wheel when I take my foot off it if. That's how it always was, but I assumed it would get better after getting the clutch replaced. :-\
  6. So, you're saying stick with 5W30. Any specific brand and type that you think is better than the others?
  7. I did find that JDM makes a set for $190 that installs with clips underneath the weatherstripping. I can't remember which board I found them on, though. I also found a set on ebay that sticks on with adhesive: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=016&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=260141886918&rd
  8. Hey guys, would it be out of line for me to request that as soon as we're done tearing apart the "experts" on that other board and proving who's righter that you get around to actually recommending a couple of products that meet your high standards? The technical discussions are beyond some of us (most of us?) and aren't real helpful in choosing an oil. :-) Numbers only speak for themselves when you understand the language, the rest of the time numbers need a spokesperson to dumb it down a little.
  9. This actually in Schenectady. They did me a HUGE favor today and I owe them big time. These guys are honest, fair, nice, and easy to talk to. $55/hr for labor and their book rates seem to be lower than most others. It looks like a seedy little shop in a seedy little neighborhood, but from now on I'm taking my cars there. Di Carlo's Service Station 885 Strong Street Schenectady, NY 12307 518-346-3002
  10. I thought about the FM transmitter, but I need a new stereo anyway as the stock one is messed up and is for cassettes anyway, and I've heard bad things about the FM units. Besides that, then I'd have to buy a new stereo AND a FM unit, and I'd rather just buy one thing. And now that I think of it, my old '90 Legacy had a tape deck with aux input on the front. Did they make a CD player then? They must have, right?
  11. Do any of the stock CD players that would fit my 98 Impreza have an aux input (front or back)? I'm one of those oddball guys who doesn't want my radio to look like a video game, I just want it to work and sound halfway decent. And I want it to have an aux for my ipod. I also don't want it to have a detachable face. These are not traits I seem to be able to find in the aftermarket. Anyone have a lead for me?
  12. Now *that* sounds like fun. I don't push things just driving around, especially in traffic, but I'd love to do it with a bunch of other guys who can help me out of a jam if I get into one.
  13. Do they even make $200 sets of tires for SUVs? I know I don't have to be the parental voice (particularly since I'm probably younger than most of you) and remind you all that it's not about how fast you can go in slippery conditions, it's about how well you can turn and stop, and no tire is going to make you do that safely at high speed in slippery conditions. Even with AWD and good tires I take it way easy. The only thing going fast in the snow gets you is deeper into the ditch when you lose it
  14. I think it's obvious that as with almost anything like this, each decision is a series of compromises, so you have to decide which traits are most important to you and which compromises you can accept. Obviously, fuel economy is one of the trade-offs, and if that's most important you should go with a lower viscosity oil. Would one of you who is familiar with some of these trade offs mind explaining a little to us new initiates? Obviously there has to be good reason why people would use 10w30 and sacrifice a little fuel economy, better than "it won't hurt anything."
  15. I'm now on my 3rd Subaru with the EJ22 in it, and everything I read makes it seem like it's one of Subaru's best designs ever. Seems like as long as you do normal preventive maintenance and don't abuse it while driving the thing will run forever. While other engines have endemic problems that will eventually need to be dealt with, the EJ22 seems to be relatively unafflicted. Or am I just too much in love with my new car?
  16. I would absolutely love to put a set of these on my '98 Impreza, but I can't seem to find a source. I know that I've seen them on a couple of '98 Outbacks, and can't seem to find sources for those either. Can anyone help me out? I'm wondering if those that had them on their Outbacks customized them models made for other cars.
  17. Nope, downtown Schenectady. It's a small city with lots of poverty, but I got three quotes from other places nearby and they were almost $800 for just the clutch and more if it needs a flywheel. He's just an old timer with a small shop, I think he keeps his overhead very low and gets jobs mostly by reputation. Apparently the old man has a new disciple who he's trained in the ways of only fixing what's broken and trying to find ways to save customers $$.
  18. Is there one that covers a 98 Impreza? Chilton makes one that goes up to 96 and Haynes now has this one that starts at 2000. Is there enough difference between my 98 Impreza and a 96 that I need to worry about getting the new manual?
  19. I think you're right, it's not a great deal but a fair one. It seems like the Legacies/Outbacks that are really good deals are flying off the dealer lots around here (I'm in Albany, NY) and sellers can get close to book value on cars in good shape. Congrats :-) Having been in the Subaru market for the last month with only $3500 in my pocket, I am a little jealous of those of you who can go for a newer Outback.
  20. It's easy! Step 1: Take the old one out. Step 2: Put the new one in. Right?
  21. I couldn't tell if the lurchiness of the new car was me being rough or if it was the fact that there's hardly anything left of the clutch and it's slipping all the time. It's been a long time since I drove an MT daily, and when I have a passenger I guess I'll have to get used to the idea of slowing and shifting before a turn, instead of flying in to it like a wild man, shifting quickly and romping on the gas coming out of the turn
  22. I was reading a site (link lost now) which said that some people have had problems with manual transmissions in AWD cars because they didn't adjust their shifting technique for the AWD. Is there anything to that? I thought the idea was just to slip the clutch enough for a smooth acceleration without giving your passengers whiplash, but not so much that you wear out your clutch too soon.
  23. When I had my '90 Legacy sedan I was grazed while backing out of the driveway by a current generation Jetta. I stopped as soon as I saw her, but it was too late and she was slow to react. My bumper had some paint scratches, but by that point was getting a little ratty so it didn't change the character of the car. She needed a new grille, right fender, and right door. Just one of the reasons why I'm still driving Subarus
  24. Thanks for the advice. I asked them about that and he said they've got it covered. I found out about this shop through a friend who took a car there to get a new starter. He called back 2 hours later and the guy said "The solenoid was bad, so I just replaced that." A job that could have easily cost $300 anywhere else was about $50. He's got a great reputation, I trust him.
