  1. I didn't do squat but jump in, put it in drive, and hit the gas.... no wheel spin, it just launched... the pics above don't show how loose the sand is... It rained heavy yesterday and the day before, and the day before that.... etc.. so the sand right now is like the packed wet beach sand... but I still wouldn't try it in my wifes 04' Grand Am GT... I'll be going there again for the next shuttle launch to see it go up... (and to again laugh at the people stuck...) I will also be helping the get unstuck.. can't just leave the tourists there.. bad form.
  2. Why we were there that day..... Three weeks later parked on sand hill in same lot... looking towards the beach This is the sand box.... you can still see some of the holes and ruts from that day even though we've had many severe rain storms since then.... Wish I had thought to take pictures of the stuck cars there that day... Will be back here for the August shuttle launch so watch out for some funny stuck pics....
  3. My big thing is that I wish I could dial my power to the end of the Legacy I want it... Right now it tends to push during cornering tending to drift wide unless you lift off the gas.(of course if I quit trying to drive like Mario Andretti... Hummm... Nah.) If you could dial the balance of power more to the rear wheels.... Then there is always the E-brake for tight turns... But I'm not sure if that will work with ABS... Oh Well.... It's still a hell of a lot of fun to drive...
  4. My sisters Camaro Z28 is the same way... (the one with the vette motor in it) Turn off the traction assist on a wet road and mash the gas..... It'll turn that thing into a $25,000 weed eater faster than you can say 'crap'... But turn the little switch... And it's almost civil... Though for driving enthusiasts, turning on the traction assist is miserable... The car just doesn't handle right. With it off you seem to have more control of the car, it just feels better. (Nothing like 400HP in a 4 wheel drift, unless of course it's more horse power... )
  5. This is slick, Prodrive basicaly takes a tiny Subaru R1 city car, puts their own body and interior on it, then stuffs the WRX STI motor in it but with bigger turbos, a revamped awd control system.... and this is what comes out.... of course pics are nice, but here you can see it in action. Fans of TopGear, this is the ride that made Jeremy Clarkson lose his lunch:lol: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK48r6651d4 Stedler "Who is 'General Failure', and why is he reading my Hard Disk?"
  6. I just bought an 05' Legacy 2.5i. And I've noticed that the AC doesn't seem to stay cold at Traffic lights or under heavy acceleration. I live on the East Coast of Florida so it gets rather hot, and I have black interior in a Regal Blue Sube... Is this normal, or does my AC nead Serviced? Thanks, "I live in my own little world, but it's ok, they know me here."
  7. I really like the fog lights on the outback, is there anyway to put an outback bumper on a Legacy Sedan... will it bolt right up?? BTW, I have an 05' Legacy Sedan 2.5i Thanks, Stedler "I want to die in my sleep like my Grandfather.... Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car."
  8. When I was at the Dealer looking at cars. It was the Outback wagon that I was interested in, with it's higher ground clearance and beefier looks. But they had such a great deal on the Legacy Sedan we bought I couldn't pass it up. "So your story pleases me because I am wondering if the sedan, with its lower ground clearance and low profile tires, will get me around the the wagon did." What I've found so far: You need to be mindful of the terrain your on.... I've been down some trails here... Getting from one area here to another... Everything is so spread out here, so I take short cuts using my GPS. I've been very careful, because the car doesn't have the ground clearance that my truck had, but I'm still taking most of the short cuts I know. I can hear the grass under the car on some of the trails, and when I was in the deep sand at the beach I could hear the sand on the bottom of the car at points... But it never slowed down... I'm not about to go rock crawling or muddin' with the Legacy, but snow, sand, trail riding... fair game. Lovin' it...
  9. My wife and I just bought an 05' Legacy Sedan, 2.5i Boxer engine, auto tranny. I've always new subaru built a great and extremely capable car. But outside of the World Rally Championships, (Go Petter Solberg) I've never seen what a sube can do. On July 4th, we went out to the beach to watch the shuttle launch. (we live on an island on the east coast of florida just south of Kennedy Space Center.) The only place to park was in this really soft, sink to your ankles beach sand. My wife told to find somewhere else to park, but me being stubourn, I went ahead anyway. (despite seeing all manor of cars stuck, and even a couple of 4wd's who waited to shift into 4wd till after they where stuck. ) Well we went and parked our car, and got out and watched the shuttle launch.... by the time we got back to where we had parked, the sand was all churned up infront and behind our car from people getting stuck and digging themselves out. So we wound up driving through rutted soft sand to get out. The legacy never even struggled.. It just went when I hit the gas... we weaved around stuck car after stuck car, with everybody staring at us as we went... people on top of a motor home were pointing and waving as we went. when we got our car out of the way, we went back and helped others get unstuck. After that we had a crowd of people wanting to see the sube... so we spent a half hour explaining the car to them.... It was a trip... I traded a 4wd ford ranger offroad for my subaru... and though I really miss my truck. (a fractured vertibrae in my back caused me to have to leave 4wd till i can afford a nice luxery 4wd like a landrover) But now I wouldn't trade my legacy for anything. Well almost anything.... Maybe a subaru Baja... Thank You Subaru.........
  10. I have an 05' Legacy sedan 2.5i, 16,691 miles on the car... just came back from a trip of about 1200 miles, Best mpg for a tank was 40mpg... That of course was with no traffic on a road with a posted speed limit of 55mph. ( i always just set the cruise and go). Average miles per gallon for the entire trip was 31.5, combination of highway and city, with lots of hills and driving most of the time at 75 to 80 mph. Stedler "I'm not dumb, I just have a command of thoroughly useless information."
  11. The Grand Cherokee also has Auto locking front hubs, that engage and disengage when you shift into 4wd. So the front wheels spin free when not engaged, all 4wd's are the same way. Some autolock some lock manually, (you get out and turn the lock on the hub) But unless they are awd, the hubs disengage when not in 4wd to save wear and tear and save gas. That's why the difference in mileage is so dramatic.
  12. There are a lot of things to consider when making a tire size change. Going to a larger diameter rim with low profile tires should be ok, use a tire size calculator to make sure your outer diameter doesn't change. As to wether changing the tire size will effect the sensors. I imagine that would depend on wether you are changing the outer diameter. On normal 4wd's you just change the gearing in the diff's so you don't change the amount of torque you generate to the wheels. As well as adjusting the speedo. But Sube's, at least the new ones, have a lot of different sensors for the AWD system as well as the ABS. will changing the size of the tires effect this. Well, if you go with a Larger outer diameter you will through off your braking distances as well as your fuel economy. (bigger tires equal greater rolling resistance, which in turn affects performance and fuel economy) I've seen older sube's with rather large tires on them, but don't know what effect it had.:-\
  13. I just bought my first Sube, an 05' Legacy. I'm coming from a 99' Ford Ranger xlt offroad 4.0 with a few engine mods.... (it would smoke the tires in 4 wheel drive.) but after a back injury 4 wheel drives where out, to much bouncing on the road... except a luxery 4wd.. which are out of my price range right now... I looked at a bunch of different vehicles but the subaru won out. For several reasons.. Not the least of which was reliability, and SAFETY, and fuel economy.. No BS, my last trip I had a tank of gas that I got close to 40MPG with. It was mostly 55mph on level roads with no traffic. I normaly average 35hwy and 29town. My insurance company rates the sube as one of the safest cars on the road only beat buy one car and it is a certain Volvo. The toyota Rav4 didn't even come close, poor fuel economy, poor safety record and reliability issues. My friends 06' Rav4 is in the shop as we speak. fuel rail problem i think, it's a v6. The Toys aren't even in the same league... neither are the honda's .... if I was looking for something like the rav4 I would have gone for the Outback.
  14. I've had the same problem with my 05' Legacy, but then I am 6'3". Plus my Legacy is also a base model... The 2.5i used for Dealer demo's and rental companies. It has cloth seats and is only manualy adjustable. If any one had taken a long ride in one of these, you know the seats aren't exactly built for comfort. I've been to a couple of upholstery shops and they couldn't believe where the wire is placed across the center of the seat back... after a long trip it makes your back numb... They also have a manual hight adjustment, unfortunately, when you raise the seat up it moves forward at the same time.. Then you look like Larry Bird driving an MG Midget, it's really rather comical.. So, as to moving the seat back farther. I've gone to the dealer and sat in every subaru there. I found that the full electric seats, (at least the leather ones) actually slide back a little farther, not much mind you maybe an inch. But then every bit helps. The electric seat also gives you 8 adjustment options, those being, Up, Down, Forward, Back, tilt up front, tilt up back, and seat back forward and back. if you move the seat all the way back, tilt the front of the seat up, it can be quite comfortable. just raising the front up adjust your legs so they feel more comfortable. We just took a trip in my car and I stuffed a small pillow under my thighs on the front edge of the seat, It helps. so you could have an upholstery place adjust the cushions in your seat most will actually have you there so they can make the adjustments to fit you. (and it's cheaper then buy a full seat.) But for optimum room, look at the WRX STI, they have a sparco racing seat, that is quite comfortable.. great seating position, they are moved further back in the car than the normal impreza seats, you just have to get use to the side and leg bolsters. To set the seat back further they didn't modify the floorpan on the car they made different seat mounting hardware. It should be adaptable to the legacy seat according to the Service manager. (not the seat track itself, just the adapters that it mounts to.) I've also talked to a couple of auto customizers that say they can adapt the sti seats to a legacy for about $25 a seat. However the 2007 Legacy GT spec B gets Leather trimmed sparco seats made just for the legacy, so it might be worth waiting for the new GT and ordering seats for it.you'll need the help of a dealer to do this as you need a vin number to order the seats.... At least that's the way my dealer does it... (but they are really nice and let me go copy down a vin number when I wan't to order something.) It's worth checking out. Hope this helps... I to would apreciate suggestions in this matter.
