overheating only when driving
subieman replied to crazyeric's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI don't know what it is about gen 1 Legacys, but after time they start to overheat. My 91 with 207k on the clock overheats like mad when I have the thermostat installed. To this day I have not figured out what the problem is. Replace the radiator, hoses and thermostat. But when the stat is in, the temp gauge rises to the top. I gave up, and I run without a stat now. Been that way for about a year. During the winter months I stick a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator to keep the motor warm. Maybe it's a blown head gasket, but it shows no signs other then overheating. Good Luck

'90 Legacy: Why doesn't tach work?
subieman replied to Brettm57's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXI had the same problem right after I bought my 91 Legacy. The tach would jump around and I would loose the temp gauge from time to time. It just happened to be a wire connector under the dash that came loose. It was pretty easy to locate because it was sparking. hehe :-\

Iridium Plugs?
I have iridium plugs in my EJ22, EA82 and EA81. My 91 Legacy (EJ22) runs the same as it did with factory plugs. My 91 Loyale (EA82) pinged really bad and I had to retard the spark after I installed them. And my 84 Hatchback (EA81) helped it big time. There is now a noticeable power boost when climbing hills. It runs smoother also. I am sooo glad for that little extra power. But the big american trucks still try to run me off the road. :-\ So thats my experience

Help! Emergency! 91 Legacy Stranded (Still)
subieman replied to Lorryb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXWow you were lucky it did not eat away the keyway on the crank. I had to replace my engine because of that. I only torque to 60lbs, guess thats why mine failed. Live and learn I guess. Good luck with the repairs!

Help! Emergency! 91 Legacy Stranded (Still)
subieman replied to Lorryb's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXMy keyway broke on my crank gear. Timing went so far off the motor would not run anymore. I replaced everything including the fuel pump, plugs, coil.... then I popped the timing cover.. :boohoo:

Long right turn = blue smoke??
Whoops hope it dident cost you too much. I payed $41 at suabruparts.com. Yes it works great and easy to install. I tried changing out the PCV valve and it did not help the smoke one bit. Happy subieing

Long right turn = blue smoke??
Here ya go... make sure you have adobe Acrobat. http://home.comcast.net/~c.moe/pvc_mod.pdf Same problem happened to my 91 Loyale. I installed the Subaru PCV kit and it fixed the smoke! I was impressed. Good Luck!

EJ22 questions for swap
subieman replied to a post in a topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVXSounds like your going to put a EJ22 into a EA81 Hatchback body? I'm doing the same swap starting next month. If your in need of computer and wiring diagrams go here http://www.kennedyeng.com/ I just received mine in the mail today.. Damn it's very very complete. It's for those VW Van people that use the EJ 22 in there cars. Good Luck..

Hauling with a Brat
Yeah thats the good thing about living out west. It's easy to find a rust free Subie. Except for my Legacy which came from Vermont.. It's really rusty. Learned my lesson the hard way.

Hauling with a Brat
Okay well first things first... this is the just about the funniest thing I've seen in a while I just laugh my rump roast off when I see it. As for the Brat I agree with all of your opinions. The $900 Brat in the paper was gone within the first day it was listed. Sooooo... I'm still not decided. 800lb is not a lot considering I weigh 250 and I have to lug my big rump roast along with building material at 5200 foot elevation which kills these ea81’s. So maybe if I tow a trailer behind the brat. That might help the weight problem! Thanks for all the input guys!

Hauling with a Brat
OK, thanks for all the input. Do you really think I would wanna destroy a Brat GD?? Come on!! Thats the last thing I would wanna do. So if you think the Brat is that weak for hauling stuff I'll just find a beater truck like you said. Thanks!

Hauling with a Brat
I just bought a new house which is a fixer upper. I need a truck, preferably a Brat so I can haul 2x4's, decking, plywood, trees, landscaping stuff...etc... So I guess my question is... how well would a brat haul these things? Mostly worried about plywood and decking material. I'm 25 miles out of town and a 1000 foot in elevation climb to 5200 feet. I can't bare the thought of not buying a Subaru, but I might have to. Thanks!
