  1. I've got an ej18, 123k miles on it, and lately I can hear a knocking sound on acceleration, usually only in 2nd or 3rd gear, and it's very faint, as in so faint that I can only hear it if it's absolutely quiet and I have the windows rolled up and the vent fan and radio off. It only knocks under load, and it seems to be RPM dependent. It's louder going up steep hills. I'm worried it's the beginning of rod knock, but I'm not absolutely sure. I don't think it's anything with the heads or lifters because it's load dependent, and I don't think it's axles because it's RPM, not speed dependent. Does anybody have experience with this?

  2. Ok, hopefully someone will have an idea what might be going on here. I've got a 94 EJ18 impreza. If I'm at near full throttle, pulling up through the power band, say like I'm accelerating in 2nd gear, the engine bogs and seems like it's pulling at 80%. Then, at around 2500-3000 RPM I hear a single audible 'click' like that of a relay, and the engine comes alive and starts pulling noticeably harder. This happens very frequently and has been since I bought the car 30k miles ago. Not a big deal, I'm just wondering what might be causing this.

I didn't realize my lowly ej18 had vtec, lol. I kid, I kid.

  3. Well, if it is piston slap, how long should I expect it to last, I mean as the car warms up? Also, I've had the car for the last year, during which I've put 17k miles on it, and it's done it since day one, so I figure if it was something catastrophic it might have happened by now. I've just begun noticing it again, because it's getting cold outside in the mornings again (PA). Also, I've noticed that putting in higher octane does not make a discernible difference in the knocking...

  4. It's got plenty of oil. This has been an ongoing chronic issue since I got the car a year ago. I've got a car with an EJ25 so I know what piston slap sounds like there, and it's not nearly as bad. Piston slap on THAT car goes away literally within 60 seconds of starting it on cold days, whereas this lasts for probably nearly 10 mins.

The ej18 does have HLA's. Any chance it's that?

  5. Just wanted to get some confirmation on this -- it IS possible to do an EJ swap into a 2WD car, right? I just want to make sure that I'm not overlooking anything. Can the stock 2WD clutch handle the power? Also, I know this isn't exactly the right forum, but are the springs interchangeable among all the EA82 series cars, i.e. can I put RX springs into a DL?
