  1. Check your plug wires, I had the exact same thing happen to me just this past week, finally figured out that it was the #3 plug wire. That is after I changed the coil pack, PCV valve, plugs and battery. (thank goodness the only thing I had to buy was the PCV valve and the battery, I had extra of everything else) 90 legacy LS SP
  2. First open the gas cap and leave it open, then lift up the carpet in the back (it will unsnap back by the rear gate) and right behind the back seat on the passenger side you will find a panel with 4 screws. Take it off and unplug the electrical connector, turn the car on and it will run out of gas in just a few seconds. That's it pretty simple. I just did mine a few weeks ago, expect a little gas when you pull the hoses off the filter so have some rags handy. Also be easy on the hoses, they rip fairly easily.
  3. Me too! I've never driven a 4WD before so this past weekend we got enough snow to go "play" Spent about an hour doing things I haven't done since I was a teenager! Or should I say Trying to do things..... It was fun but I needed to learn how to handle this car. I love it! I feel much safer now that I've tried to slip and slide on purpose and learned how to handle the 4WD. My boyfriend drove the car for the first time and fell in love with it, it handles so much better than his truck, guess I'd better watch out he may try to steal it.
  4. Boy I hope that I don't get "tagged" as well! I've had State Farm for almost 20 years now and no claims until about a month ago when I totaled out my first Legacy. So far they have been really good to me, I paid $500 for the first one, ran great but had a severe power steering leak, I think thats why she sold it so cheap, she had been told that it needed the whole rack and pinion replaced, turned out it had a pin hole in one of the lines. I fixed it for $20. A month later I totaled it out, they gave me $2200 for it and I bought it back for $25! Then I found my second one, a Legacy LS SP, REALLY NICE car. When I started it up at the dealers it sounded horrible, lifter tick, pulled to the left none of the tires matched etc. They wanted $1900. I told the sales man there was no way, it sounded like it was ready to throw a rod! He went in the building and came back out and wanted to know if I would take it for $900? I said SOLD! 1 motor flush. new plugs, another oil change, ATF change, rear wheel bearing, alignment and 1500 miles later it's running like a charm! Hope it keeps it up, in the meantime I have a whole "extra" car for parts if I need them. I came out ahead on this one, hope SF doesn't find out! I asked them if the wreck was going to raise my ins. and was told no because I hadn't had any claims and that SF allowed you one "forgiven" claim. Guess I'll have to wait and see. Better go find some wood to knock on.
  5. Nope, still has air struts, and all the componets for the air suspension, it looks like just the lines to the struts have been un- hooked. When I get my other Legacy stripped down I will have a set of good regular struts that I may put on if the ari is that much trouble to mess with. Thanks
  6. OK another question, The LS has height control, but it appears that at one point or another maybe new struts were installed but it was never hooked back up. All the lines are there they just don't appear to be connected. Needless to say Haynes doesn't give much info on them. Is it really worth the trouble to hook eveything back up and try to get it to work? Does it really help out all that much? We have been getting some good snow here this week and it has me thinking that an inch or two of extra height would be nice.
  7. I Hope you're right, when I got the second car I drove 200 miles to look at it and when we started it, it sounded horrible, really bad lifter ticking, so bad I wasn't sure it would make the 200 mile return trip home. The guy knocked a BIG chunck of $ off so I decided to give it a try. Went down the road aways and filled up, put in a bottle of STP oil treatment and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner, by the time I got 75 miles out it was running smooth and no ticking. I have since changed the oil (twice in 1000 miles), AT fluid etc. Seems to be running fine now, get good mpg, but since I already have the other motor that I know more of the history of and runs great I figure I might aswell keep it.....just in case.
  8. A little history here, I bought my first Subaru the first week of Nov. a 1990 Legacy L (190,000 miles 4WD). The second week of Dec. I totaled it out ( a school bus pulled out in front of me on a very icy road) I bought it back from the ins. co. for $25.00 intending to fix it, it needed a new hood, bumper, front fender, and radiator. I found another 1990 only this one had 170,000 miles 4WD, very very little rust and was a "Limited" LS. Soooo I bought it. What I am doing is stripping the "old" one down for the parts (in case I ever need them) I would like to pull the engine and keep it. I have a Haynes manual but it is not very informative. I would like to know if any of you have any tips for removal and storage of the engine. I am hoping to get to it in a few weeks so I am just planning at the moment. It still runs like a charm, no leaks and smooth as silk. I go out every few days and start it up just to keep things lubed up but without much of a radiator (has a big hole in the top) I don't let it run more than a minute or so. Thanks!
  9. OK, got a picture of the climate control maybe that will help. I'm still looking for any info on this thing! Cougar, there are no controls on the vents other than the directional ones. PS Grey Ghost is the nick name for weimaraner's (because they are grey/silver), of which I have 2! and I also had GGHOST put on my car plates, which is grey/silver colored!
  10. No, There isn't even anything that says AC. I know it has AC but there is no button for it. Seems like you just set the temp where you want and it decides if it's heat or AC, and what vent/fan speed it will use. I did figure out that the AC compressor runs if it's on auto (and defrost) and it doesn't when on econ.
  11. Hi, I've been lerking (and learning) here for awhile and I must say this is a great site! I got a 1990 Legacy LS about a month ago and I can't find instructions to the climate control, it's not like what is pictured in the owners manual. It says it is "Automatic Climate Control" and is digital. Is there a "bi-level"? The heat comes out the defrost and floor vents when on econ or auto and only out of the defroster vents when on def. The only way to get air out of the dash vents is to turn the temp way down. I would love to get some heat out of the dash, my fingers are freezing! ( I know wear gloves) Any help would be great! Thanks in advance.
