  1. todd-thank you for the suggestion and did this using the poly version.the fit is tight but it does work and yes tightens up the steering. a good upgrade i would recommend to all. question, want to do this to my 85 gen II brat, will it work there as well? again, thank you.
  2. steering wheel has seen better days and i don't want to mess with trying to fix it. Is the easy, quick aftermarket fix a grant wheel? thanks for help and any suggestions you may have.
  3. 1981 brat - seems the rag joint for steering is just about gone. have tried dealers with no luck. does any one know a good source for replacement, or will i have to go to something like a universal joint along the lines of what flaming river makes? if so anyone know what the spline count would be?
  4. you should be able to do the light thing with 1 relay, OEM, or aftermarket. can you help me identify where in the system i would install the relay and would this replace the stock relay (as in should i take it out) Alternator output in stock alternators is not very high have you or anyone else had good results replacing the stock alternator and if so what amperage should i go with? as alway many thanks for help.
  5. want more light from dual headlight 85 brat. struggled and no luck finding factory relay so i could replace with aftermarket. assuming i would need four relays (hi, lo for both sides)? then tried aftermarket lights (H4 conversion) and lights did not seem to work right? any help appreciated.
  6. thanks to all for help. got it out no problem and found another at bone yard:banana:
  7. bad guys broke into daughters 87 g1-10 and as part of process pryed up corner of sunroof breaking glass. can i simply replace glass can i easily pull glass from another car at bone yard also, they broke rear wing window:mad: same questions as above... thanks for any help.
  8. did some more clean up work on engine compartment. wired fan hot lead to switch so i could run fan manually, tried it but no luck. even worse now fan does not come on no matter what i do. but...a couple of dash lights now come on that did not before. will proceed to replace fan and motor.
  9. grounded wire to radiator and fan chassis, came on both times! since i just bought a new thermo switch, what could it be? thanks. ps. exhaust came out awsome.
  10. sorry got side tracked on project. took rig to muffler shop and had new exhaust (from head to tail pipe) installed yesterday afternoon. unfortunately once we started to pull off lift, water heater hose broke and made a bit of a mess. shop has some extra time, so they are installing all new hoses for me. will pick up tonight and hopefully get back on track. other brat at carb shop, having carb rebuilt. did not do weber upgrade instead opted to have unit completed gone through including jetting on a wet flow bench to optimize performance. not cheap but an interesting excercise in what might be done with the stock unit. will report on this later.
  11. excellent suggestion, will do tonight!thanks.
  12. checked thermostate and it is working. also installed new cap. problem persists, fan simply does not come on when car gets hot. will probably call it a day and simply install a manual switch on the dash. oh well.
  13. nipper, again thanks for info however the problem has not been found. currently with every thing hooked up and car running, the fan does not come on. i will certainly follow up on your suggestions tonight.
  14. thanks nipper and waimaks- good to know guage position relative to fan coming on. AS per your suggestion ,did check (with key on) grounded power wire to thermo switch and fan runs. having done this, does this also address your question relative to power before and after the motor ? also checked body ground wire to radiator. am not sure how thermostate would keep fan from coming on but if you think it is worthwhile to check, i am on it. can not seem to figure this problem out so very much appreciate the help here.
  15. thanks, i understand about the switch and mentioned i had replaced it. my question is how hot does the guage reading need to be so the fan comes on.
  16. working on 81 brat. updated motor by a year, had radiator tested and it's tight also replaced fan switch. tested fan and it works. let motor warm up and no fan, got close to 3/4 up on temp the guage with overflow tube blowing steam like a train and still no fan. looking at the guage when would i expect to see fan come on. i know if all else fails i can connect manual switch but would like to make it work as intended. any suggestions or help thanks.
  17. spent this past sunday taking out ea 81 from my 81 brat and putting in another ea81 from a 1982 brat. had to make a few minor changes and it did go right in.
  18. since my intended use is "on road", appreciate your observation that it will be the freeway where much of the benefit is realized. to that end i am trying to get a fix on what might be the best adaptation. However, if the conversion to a ej82 and associated 5-sp is a 40hr job for someone with moderate mechanical skills, then my interest is diminished. ican you shed some light on what the conversion time might be?
  19. really appreciate suggestions. Is it not more cost effective to simply install a larger motor than build the existing one? the ej22 i have read about before and seems a logical switch but not so the awd box. would this imply major mods to the axles and/or their placement? in another world far, far away (international harvestor)i am in the midst of a frame off on a 1961 scout, which has become particularly troublesome as regards axles.
  20. working on 81 brat and looking for engine (and tranny if necessary) upgrade that will reflect favorably on the effort i am making on the rest of the rig. still somewhat new to soobys and do not want to stray beyond marque for solution, so what motor/tranny enhancement would give me the most bang for the buck. do not care if i keep clutch but do what to retain 4-wheel drive. will do fabrication and if possible, keep entire acquisition cost below $1000. many thanks for your advice.
  21. i probably need to get some, so what does "not to" expensive equal?
  22. 86 bratman-thank you for setting me straight. thought your reference to "dinger" was some sort of code for latch, which i misunderstood. appreciate your staying in there with me and provide some education. many thanks.
  23. bingo! what is it? and what if the electrical connection is cut?
  24. apporx. 1 inch wide and long, may 5/8 inch tall. the wire feeding into it looks sizeable - guessing #10 or 12. when you remove glove box, it is on the underside of the dash, just to the right of the lcenter latch. i know it is a factory installation.
  25. no, the box is definately electrical maybe a capacitor or something???
