  1. thought that I was going to fail for sure. i have the semi-6 lug conversion (6 lug wheels drilled for the 4x140mm) and tires that stick at least 2 inches past the fenders front and back, I cut the fenders to clear the larger wheels and tires. The lights all work good except for the hazards, which I wired straight from the battery (i used a small fuse to be safe) and the horn is an aftermarket button on the side of the dash. The guy doing the inspection asked me if I had trailer wheels on there, then mentioned that they sure stuck out alot. I told him that I couldn't see putting anything smaller than a 14" wheel on a 4x4. Well that sparked his interest because either he had never seen a subaru 4x4 or didn't realize that they had high and low transfer cases "just like a real 4 wheel drive" he said. He asked me if the drilled wheels gave me any trouble and I just told him that I had been driving it back and forth to work 20 miles each way at highway speeds for a month already. Well, anyway, to make a long story pretty much the same length, it passed and I am glad, because I will be putting 2 year tags on it and I doubt if it will have to go through that again...at least not in its current form.
  2. looks like the same job that I did on my gl wagon. not much more room to go without actually starting to cut into the doors...plus for most of the cars this year in my area, this part of the fenders are rusted anyway, so it just gives a good excuse to cut anyway!
  3. I agree...sell it to me (of course for a discount - lol) and I will let you quit worrying about it and start fixing your future brat!
  4. Yeah, but hey, the come with the lugnuts!
  5. you just let me know what can be done and by jove, I might hafta nab one of those things. that would totally ROCK!
  6. and when you are there, you are going to pick up a few kewl bumpers that they have there right??
  7. talk about redneck heaven!! That is very kewl. with the tight turning radius anyway, I bet it could turn around inside it's own shadow!
  8. I built one of those (of course not all the bells and whistles) with a drive system out of a zero turn mower someone had rolled (several times). everything else was trashed, but the hydraulics were good. They are fun, just not fast enough for me, especially with no suspension:eek:
  9. man, that is a real bummer. I sure wish I could help, but I just do not know. you might just want to ditch the turbo and intake and just go NA. Just a thought... but what do I know.
  10. looks very nice, good work! Just one hairbrained thought that i had and just HAD to toss it out there for someone more mechanically minded and better than fabbing than myself, but COULD a person use the existing transmission on a soob, put the rear output shaft to the transfer case and drive 2 more axles off of it, making it a 6x6? Might be a long rig doing it this way, but just wondering...
  11. you know though, having come from the dark side (read: the side of front and rear solid axle rigs like fords, toyotas and jeeps) I am enjoying the clearance that I have with a smaller tire.
  12. Driving around and taking a corner probably too fast, I heard a loud popping sound coming from my drivers side rear wheel area. Straightened out and it is fine, but now I can take a corner normal speed and hear it. I have heard talk about the "mustache" bar and was wondering if this could be the culprit? I have tried to move the tire with my hand and it feels tight, so it is not a bad wheel bearing (am I correct in my assumption?) Any suggestions would certainly be appreciated.
  13. on the inside of the wheel yes, well, it might be slinging it other places too, but can't really tell. I just got some white wheels, so it is showing especially on these. No clicking, no scraping, no "helicopter" sound etc. Just greasy gunk. Hosed it down last night (first time this poor thing has been washed in over 3 years) and going to see if I can tell anything more.
  14. bad thing about parts cars around my place is that I want to drive them lol. The car I am driving now should probably be a parts car, but it runs too good and I look too good in it!
  15. I have some black gunk splattering my wheels. Is this bearing needing attention or an axle that is throwing grease?
  16. to me (and this is only my humble opinion) it sounds like a flaky switch by the way you described it. Try taking it out and cleaning the contacts and see what that can do. Since the headlights turn on and off with the ignition too, you can also give that a look-see for any loose connection.
  17. No problem at all. I did it to my toyota truck and my toyota camry with no ill effects. the truck would not go so fast, but the camry would fly for a 4 banger. The axle actually turns much slower than your wheels since it so close to the center, especially the larger tires you get. besides, some of those clamp thingys that they give you with the kits are an exercise in futility, at least IMHO which is not worth much usually.
  18. haven't changed the spark plugs yet, I did change the spark plug fluid and greased both the left circumferential and the right horizontal muffler bearings which should be good for at least 5+ FWHP. Next I will be painting it yellow for an additional boost!
  19. LOL, though that is what you meant, I was thinking, ok, I am very new to Subaru's but that sounds like an odd place for a part like that!
  20. haven't yet, but will be, just wanted to get things working for now. Funny thing now is that after I hooked everything up and got it working. drove it around a bit. Got back home, ate, went back out and now it won't start (lol). No spark to the plugs, I do have voltage at both sides of the coil which is a good sign (I guess). I haven't had a chance to diagnose it yet, but it is probably either the distributor or (hopefully not) the timing belt. Either way, I now have a gremlin to search for...all because of a stinking horn!
  21. Thanks all for your help and suggestions. I tried plugging the old horn in, no cigar (didn't think it would since I was getting no voltage, but I was going to try anything). pulled fuse panel and check for voltage, it was good on both sides. Fusible Link was good (I only have 3, there is a 4th one, but there is only one side to the 4th one (the one toward the front of the car), nothing on the outside). when I pulled the fuse panel, one side of the fuse for the clock, horn and hazard was not plugged in to anything and there was nothing close to plug it in to (because I figured that I might have pulled it lose when I pulled the fuse panel). I ran a new wire from the battery to that side of the fuse, and everything works except the horn (must have another problem there). Then I just ran new wires for the horn and hooked a separate button up for it. one day when I am ambitious, bored or both, I will trace it down and hook it up to the original button, but for now, it works so I am done. Again, thanks all for your suggestions for this minor thing. Now I need to see if I can help Cobcob figure out his problem, but I don't know enough about subaru's yet to help...(Sorry cobcob)
  22. ok, I noticed one more thing that might give someone here the info needed to help my sorry a$$. everytime I press the horn button or the hazard button, the "fasten seatbelt" indicator lights up on the instrument panel. So this must mean that something happening as it is normally not lit, only when the hazard or the horn is pressed. There is no juice getting through to the horn wires now though as my voltmeter registers nothing even with the horn pressed.
  23. I cannot confirm nor deny anything... seriously though, I unplugged the old horn to plug in the new one...that is all. It did not work, so I assumed that I plugged in the neg to pos, so I change it around still nothing, that is when I looked at the fuse, saw that it fused the hazard, clock etc so I checked these and none of them are working. I have screwed around with stuff before that i had to undo, but there is nothing to undo here...or I would I swear!
  24. Bwahhha. How did I know that I was going to get an answer like that from you??? You know how it is, if it isn't broke, fix it til it is. Everything was working good, hazard, clock etc, then I decided to do something simple like replace the horn and BAM! if this sequence keeps up, I will be replacing the camshaft before it is said and done!
  25. Yep, thanks for that, it checked out ok, that was my first thought (as it is also the easiest). unfortunately, no go as the fuse is fine (I replaced it just to be safe).
