Hi Folks, I just aquired a hi mileage Legacy last week after pondering the sanity of buying such a car. 273xxx miles. Automatic. I have several Loyals so I do know about Subaru maintenance and fixit issues. I figured before buying the beast that I would replace the timing belt, H2O pump, belt pulleys, tensioner, probably front crank seal, cam seals..... Question....The belt kit I bought (mitzumo)Spell? includes the crank seal and cam seals. Are these seals any good or should I buy OEM from Subaru. Also I would like to reseal the oil pump while in there. OEM gaskets?? for the oil pump? Many thanks to such a GREAT forum! Allan oops, forgot to add thermostat, the one you mention in the forum. Also change oil and filter, air filter

Hi, I am not new to the forum I just usually don't post because my questions are usually found and answered in the forum somewhere. But now I have a question.... I am looking at a high mileage 272xxx miles on a 93 Legacy wagon. Automatic, looked for oil leaks and really didn't see anything to report. No rust, does have a crappy drivers side rear door bashed by a hit-n-run turd. Otherwise pretty sweet ride. Drives nice and straight and trany shifts right nice. Steering nice and tight, does not drift to either side. Maintenance records not available so timing belt,h2o pump, pulleys, etc. would be on list to change if I get the car. $700.00. I have located several doors as replacements but wrong color and would have to repaint. Could this be an ok deal? I believe that this is some kind of deluxe model. Moon roof (works) really neat stereo system (works great) nice leather covered steering wheel nice covered seats. Lights in the bottom of the doors. At the u pull it yard I looked inside many early and several latter Legacies and like the 93 Legacy I am looking at a LOT more.

I have been leaning toward replacement, I just wanted some opinions. Thanks CA

Hi Folks, I have been a lurker for many years, and have enjoyed the many helpful tips I have gleaned over the years. Now I finally have a question. I am in the process of changing my timing belts on my 91 Loyal along with the pulleys and a new water pump (aisian). My question....the pulley on the oil pump has lost the outside retainer ring. Do I need to replace the pulley? It looks like the ring(retainer)? might keep the back timing belt from slipping forward into the outer belt. Just wondering. Thanks for a great forum.

The trany came from a gl with a carb, So no neutral switch. I have all the linkage, the inside consol pieces, etc. A rather dumb question......with the d/r system do I still have the fwd option, or am I in 4wd hi all the time until I need to switch to lo, if needed? dumb question eh? both are ea82's and non turbo both manual trannies -

I am new to the forum and have only posted one other post in the past. I have a 1990 Loyal and am doing a reseal on the engine. It is a 5speed manual with the pushbutton 4wdr system. I also have a d/r trany from a gl wagon. Is the d/r an easy swap into the Loyal or is it not a good swap? From what I have been reading the d/r is something to be desired. I do a lot on snow driving, sometimes rather deep snow. I work at an observatory in central Oregon. I have the tools and expertise to do a swap if it is possible. -
Well the engine is out of the vehicle. I wanted to install a new clutch, throwout bearing and pilot bearing or bushing, whichever. I will look at the rear seal and if it is already leaking I will replace it if it isn't leaking maybe I will leave it alone. thanks for all the feedback.... much appreciated

One question I didn't ask outright. Are the seals, meaning, main seals front and rear any good in these gasket sets? Don't want to have to change these very often!

Thanks for the help guys, I have rebuilt fords, chevy.dodge, and many vw's,several motorcycles but this is my first subaru. They seem to have several unique problems, especially leaking .(jeep) !! oh, excuse me jeeps don't leak oil they mark their territory. I was wondering if the Ishino gasket sets are any good, but I would still use the felpro headgasket. Any input on the Ishino parts? Also several parts houses carry the same product for the same prices. I live on the west coast and was looking at the autopartswarehouse for my parts. Anyone out there have any knowledge about these folks? Thanks for your help. Allan

Hi Folks, I am new to posting on this forum but I have been lurking in the background for a few monthes. I acquired a 1990 Loyal from a friend. Engine has a blown head gasket plus needs compleat reseal plus water pump, oil pump, new timing belts, etc. Question: I have read many posts saying go with the felpro pt head gasket, so are the rest of the gaskets in the felpro line ok for the entire engine reseal? I am looking for the proper set to do the job proper. also help on the oil and water pumps would be helpful. Are aftermarket as good as oem? thanks in advance Allan
