  1. Hi USMBers, happy holidays:drunk: - I have a 95 legacy L 2.2 manual - 147k - been bouncing around some rutted roads lately, and think I may need some strut work - it was "tracking" to the right when I let go of the wheel (not really "Pulling") - tires are pretty new, air pressure is right on the money. Dumped it at the Midas near work last Friday, didn't tell them any symptoms, just asked for a 4-wheel alignment. Headed out and on the highway, it is still tracking right. I am thinking now perhaps the struts could need replacing..? They are original equipment. I am into Midas for $60-ish already(for the alignment), I may drop it there tomorrow and have him see what is up. Is it worth shopping around, or should prices be pretty uniform for this? Any advice/price estimates re:strut work for a 95 Legacy appreciated!
  2. Don't be offended, Nipper - I guess if I got a good enough deal (<wholesale) on a "Phase I" 2.5, it would be worth it, so if I had to eventually piss some $$ into it I wouldn't feel bad. I am gonna run the 95 until I have a good enough excuse to ditch it however.
  3. Thank, so if I get a 2000 or newer, I should be OK - I LOVE my 95 - but it is funny how many people have said to me: "Don't lesbians drive those things" ? Where did THAt come from..?
  4. Help me out here. I have a 95 2.2 Legacy that has been great, but due to a new longer commute, I will probably have to get a newer vehicle after the winter. I never buy new, so I am looking for a used vehicle. Although I love the AWD, good mileage and cargo space of the Subaru wagon, I am leaning away from Subaru just because of the head gasket issues with the 2.5 engine. I don't need any $2000 surprises. Can anyone convince me to stay with Subaru and not defect? Talk to me! :-\
  5. I always called it a "boot" - but that's the trunk in England, ya? Who invented this language anyways - my concern was damaging the leather boot itself, I really don't want to "pry" too much - if I find one at the junkie, I suppose I could practice on those...
  6. ??pry thegaiter?? THX for the responses tho, I will have to go prowl the junkyards.. THX
  7. From the NON MISSION CRITICAL department: 95 Legacy: The leather shifter knob is kinda trashed after getting dust off my hands from sanding oil primer on it(was in a rush from job, didn't wash hands good) - ate the surface off - anyways, I started to unscrew it and it seems to integrate with the leather boot thru some sort of collar underneath? I just screwed it back and figured I would ask here first before I messed it up = has anyone changed shift knobs, and know how this collar works, also what aftermarket shift knobs would work? Thanks!
  8. If I upgrade vehicles, I would look for a Legacy or Outback wagon, 98,99 maybe - would the bolt-on trailerr hitch be the same?
  9. Thanks for the responses! Can anyone suggest a trailer hitch setup that can be removed, I may be upgrading to a new Subaru in the next few years- it would be cool if I could move the hitch setup from the 95 to the newer one..?
  10. Has anyone trailered with Subarus? I have a 95 Legacy wagon, and am considering a single snowmobile trailer to transport my sled. Has anyone pulled a small trailer with their Soob? I don't feel like upgrading to an SUV or pickup just to do this.. No steep inclines. I am in the northeast. Thanks!
  11. I swapped the starters, and the EBAY one works fine as promised! ($20 - gotta love it..) - Cleaned the contacts on the original, keep it for a spare..
  12. Thanks - I have a used starter I picked up on EBAY I am going to slap in today(I am laid off, and it is still warm out so I will do that this a.m.) - I am curious how to replace these "contacts" on the bad one, I may just do it and have a spare again- my HAYNES manual shows how to separate the solonoid from the starter, but it doesn't say how to service these "contacts" - can any of y'all advise me on this? (and where to get new contacts?)
  13. Hi all - 95 2.2 manual Legacy - starter clicks occasionally but eventually turns over - is this maybe the solonoid contacts, can this be solved by cleaning contacts, or should I just go ahead and replace the starter/solonoid unit altogether? It lookds like an easy swap. As usual, all input appreciated!
  14. Anyone know whether to tell whether a starter is the factory original or a rebuilt/replacement? 92 Legacy EJ22 manual tranny - Thanks in advance!
  15. Anyone know of a good on-line source for a rebuilt starter? Didn't spy any on EBAY - thx!
  16. Hi, starter made a weird noise, but seems OK now, so time to find another starter for when that day inevitably comes. My question is, which other legacy starters will fit mine - does it have to be from a manual tranny, will a 91-94 2.2 fit?, and will one out of a 2.5 fit? Any knows how these cross-reference, I would appreciate the "4-1-1" - Thanks!
  17. Thanks! When it warms up(if ever) I will have a look. Is this switch easy to get at?
  18. 95 Legacy wagon - the auto-door lock seems very sensitive, when I open the inside door latch itself(not the lock), it locks the other three doors and the hatch. I carry an extra key in my wallet just in case. Has anyone seen this, seems like a malfunctioing switch? THX in advance:)
  19. Grease Fittings/Zerks on 95 Legacy? Are there any? Can't find any, or any reference to them in OwnManual or Haynes - guess everything is sealed?
  20. Hi all, love the new board! My 95 Legacy wagon, one of the rear hatch struts pops off the lower mount, the socket comes off the ball, it actually busted the taillight on me! Anyone experience this or know what's causing this? THX in advance to all replies..
