  1. I'm getting mixed information. I'm trying to source a good used motor for my friend 2009 Outback (SOHC) and the online parts interchanges are only listing 2008-2009 legacy engines as compatible. Other info on some unconfirmed boards and such say 06 and 07s will swap. These engines aren't cheap but the 06/07s are certainly more affordable. Any difference between Forester engines those years? For some reason they don't come up in the interchanges either. Just needing to do a long block swap. Intake and everything can stay with the car. Thanks in advance. Would love to save him some $$$
  2. Buddies ECU was suspect in his 98 OB. I pulled the ECU and in the process broke the plastic tab pictured. Checked against another ECU with same broken tab and neither one will read now. ODBII scanner will power on when plugged in, but will not connect to scan for codes. Scanner is good. Tried playing and pushing on the back of the OBDII port with no change. Is there something important about that tab? Or did I blow a fuse somewhere in this process? I can swap engines and transmissions on these cars no problem but I'm not great with electronics.
  3. Happens every once in a while and only when driving. Usually at a particular dip in the road on my way to work. The engine hesitates (RPMS drop) for a moment and I can hear a brief squeak or chirp. Doesn't happen often but is increasing in frequency. 2011 Outback Ej25 167k and AT. No engine lights etc. AC is off. Drives 100% otherwise. Any ideas?
  4. Hey all. Recently got a 98 Legacy Outback on the cheap. Prior owner said the AWD doesn't work. Checked the 2WD fuse, not installed. Driveshaft is all there. No grinding or growling. Drove it up a wet grassy hill and compared it to my 2011 Outback and the 98 sure slips a lot compared to the one that I know works. Any real way to know for sure that the AWD is not engaged/working? I have a parts legacy that I can swap trans and diff over from but obviously don't want to if not necessary.
  5. I'm doing a motor swap on a 95 legacy next week. The original motor reportedly has a bad/broken crankshaft at only 130k. As I recall an ej22 head fits in a flat rate priority shipping box.
  6. Getting back into the subaru game a little bit more. Can't remember my account password and the email associated with it was discontinued. (AdventureSubaru is my account) Anyway. Got a good deal on an 08 Tribeca that needs to become the family vehicle by July when baby #3 arrives. I'm selling my 4runner and putting a lift etc under our 2011 outback and it will become my daily. Anyway - 08 Tribeca with the ez36. 175k. Good body. Smooth shifting. Check engine light is on for a p0306 (cylinder 6 misfire) - Drove it 3 hours home. When pulling up a steep hill or if I accelerate quickly the CEL with flash with the active misfire. Driving gently and cruising home at 60-65mph and 2kish RPM it was smooth and not flashing. At idle it seems to stumble a bit but the CEL doesn't flash. Ordered a good used coil off ebay and will pick up a spark plug after work today and fingers crossed. What else should I be checking? Upon googling there was a long list of possibilities and outcomes from leaking valve cover gaskets, to bad ECU to head gasket issues. This is only the second EZ motor I've owned, so what are the more common fail points to be aware of?
  7. I've read mixed info on whether this engine swap would work. I have an 05 outback with a good engine in it and am looking at an 06 forester with a blown motor. Was hoping to throw the engine from the 05 into the 06 but want to be sure this is a workable swap before I jump in. Another option is going back a year to an 04 If not, what info is out there on engine compatability between 2000-2009s?
