  1. OK, lets get back on topic. Looking for ideas for the front differential. 1. Phanton Grip does NOT make a front LSD to fit the 2nd/3rd Gen subaru 2. Cusco Japan LSD's cost is in excess of $1000 which is rather steep. And I cant really tell from their website if they make one for the front diff. We are back at square one. Someone mentioned the idea of modifying a rear diff LSD to fit the front. Has anyone done any homework on this idea. I would be happy to get the ball rolling but I would need a front diff assembly from a 5speed D/R to get started. I already have all the rear diff parts. Perhaps I could visit a few tranny shops/machine shops and see what is possible. Does anyone have a front diff assembly from a 5speed D/R to donate for the cause?
  2. I dont think the switch has a shrader valve under it. If you were to look at the switch on my 87 RX you would see what I mean. I am guessing there are 3 switches total. The one on the accumulator/drier acts as a dual switch for the low pressure side of the system. It checks for low pressure and pressure that is too high. There is also another switch built into the compressor that is checking for pressure that is too high on the "high" side of the AC system. But I need details, details, details to go any further. I cant exactly trace the wires through the wiring harness and the chilton/haynes wiring diagrams are useless.
  3. looking at the dryer/receiver it appears the system would have to be vented to change it out. But I still cant tell if its bad. And why are there 4 wires? I check the resistance on the two pairs..........one pair is open to the pressure switch and the other pair is closed. I tried jumping them but to no avail. I need to know what the correct resistance is before I can determine if it is bad. The wiring schematic was no help.
  4. I replaced the MAF again but it had no effect. I did find a spark plug wire that was defective. That cleared up most of the problem. I tried adjusting the timing but I just cant see any numbers on the timing marks.......so I adjusted it to ear and it seems better. Are there actually numbers on the flywheel indicating the timing marks? Or do I just have to adjust the timing at night? :-)
  5. The Air Conditioning on my 87 RX is not working. Here is what I have done/check thus far: 1. Checked the freon pressure. Pressure is good. Can also see in the receiver/dryer look glass and see bubbles. 2. checked the A/C fuse 3. Checked for proper resistance on the AC Relay 4. Hot wired the A/C Compressor to make sure it was working (and it blew cold air when it was hotwired) 5. The auxillary A/C fan (ie. the extra cooling fan on the radiator) does not come on.....even with the compressor hot wired) I am thinking the low pressure sensor on the receiver/dryer might be bad. How do I test it? Is there a proper voltage/resistance that should be seen from the low pressure sensor? Can the low pressure sensor be replaced without evacuating the freon? (note - The low pressure sensor has 4 wires) Does anyone have any other ideas on why the compressor is not getting voltage? Thanks, Gregg
  6. I was able to hotwire the AC using the single blue wire and it blows cold. Now I need to figure out why the compressor clutch is not getting 12 volts. I still have no clue what the other 2 wires to the compressor are for. Time to start a new thread......see if anyone can assist in AC problem.
  7. I just double checked my AC wiring. I have a total of 5 wires. - 2 wires go to the pulser sensor on top of the AC pulley - 1 blue wire to AC Compressor (with its own harness connector) - 2 wires to AC Compressor (1 blue and 1 black from a different harness connector) Any ideas? Thanks, Gregg
  8. My 87 RX AC compressor has 3 wires going to it. I understand ground and 12v but what would the third wire accomplish? Basically my AC is not working. I checked the freon charge and it looks good, next I tried to hotwire the AC compressor to see if the clutch engages but I dont know know which wire to use. Any ideas? Thanks, Gregg
  9. I recently replaced my MAF (with a junkyard MAF) and solved the poor running issues on my 87 RX. Its the newer style MAF with the small wires sticking up in the tube (ie, not the vane style). I was wondering if this new style MAF can go bad if it gets dirty? Will electrical cleaner possibly help? I suspect my new MAF is already going bad as RX is again running poorly.......I cant floor it and get any power but it seems to run fine if I drive it like Grandma would.
  10. It appears to boil down to the fact that there is no front diff LSD option. After reading through all the different threads on the subject its even more confusing. Some people even claim that Phanton Grip makes a front LSD....but that doesnt actually appear to be true. I dont have the machine shop to fabricate something new or try to retrofit another LSD. I dont even know what an LSD looks like. My experience is entirely with Trakloc Lockers. But I will shortly learn what the rear LSD is like because I have a 3.7 LSD diff and a 3.9 non-LSD diff. Hopefully I will be able to make a 3.9 LSD Diff. Has anyone out here actually seen the guts of the front diff? I think that if we all collaborated and pooled our various resources of time, tools, parts and a few bucks we might actually be able to come up with a solution. I will have a spare 4speed D/R tranny very soon that I can tear down and donate parts to the cause. We might even get the administrators of this site to setup a special section for "building a front diff" so that we can attract more people to the cause.
  11. Does anyone know the website or contact information for "Phanton Grip"? I would like to inquire about a front LSD.
  12. Is it possible to install the LSD components from a rear diff into the front diff of a 5sp D/R tranny? Is there any other way to get a limited slip or locker in the front? (I already know about the divorced t-case option) Thanks, Gregg
  13. The jack would need to be down............otherwise you are building up pressure.......logically it makes sense.

  15. The bumper requires the bumper support mounts (that go in the frame tubes) to be about 35 inches apart. My new bumper has them about 35 inches but the bumper mounts do allow for a little bit of give. Take a look at how your bumper mounts to find out. Just take some measurements from your car and then head out to a junkyard with a tape measure to see what might work. You can always make your own bumper mount brackets if need be.
  16. I dont care about it remaining stock. It already has a chevy bumper and a 5speed D/R tranny. I think this color might get the looks (its not my vehicle.....just an example)........dare to be bold.
  17. A nice coat of rhinoliner makes all the difference. here is a photo of the bumper the way it should look. The hitch is a wonderful addition. This brat has gone through some major body work and rust removal. The Chevy Luv bumper is on, its primed and ready to be painted. Any suggestions on color? It used to be a gold color and it has a brown/tan interior. Thanks, Gregg
  18. Ozified, I sent you another email..........did you get it this time?
  19. Yep, it was a bad thermostat from Napa......problem is gone.
  20. I am trying to order a lift from PKDavis but I havent heard back from him in numerous days. Any idea if he is still in operation?
  21. I just put in a new thermostat today........the next few days will tell me if that solved the problem. When I buy new parts I expect them to work........silly thought!!!! :-) I dont think its the radiator cap.......they generally dont become intermittently bad.
  22. When I drilled the holes in the bumper support brackets (which came off the donor vehicle using a grinder) I didnt take into account that there was a little bit of play in the bolt holes. If you drill the holes just right it will sit an inch higher. I dont even know what the original bumper on the brat looks like........mine was a mangled mess from a bit of rear end damage.
  23. This is the photo of the bumper installed. The bumper is going to get a good coating of Rhinoliner. Bumper hitch and everything! This came off a 79 chevy luv pickup......which was made for Chevy by Isuzu. Perhaps all the little chevy/Isuzu trucks have this same bumper. Gregg
  24. I am dying with anticipation.........what did it turn out to be?
