How do you ajust the emergency brake cable on a 99 Forester? I need to remove the slack. When the handle is pulled all the way up I don't get much braking.

Is it normal to be able to spin the rear wheels on a AWD vehicle when the car is in park. I have a Forester that I jacked up in the rear and I was able to spin the tires. Does this mean the rear wheel drive has been disengaged???

Are the front wheel bearings on a 99 Forester as prone to failure as the rear ones??? My Forester has 90,000 miles, the rear ones have been replaced. I am hearing the rore of a bad wheel bearing again, could it be the front ones???

How do you clear the code??? When the bearings were replaced the sensor was left unplugged and water shorted it out. The sensor was replaced, but still abs is not working, I tested this in the snow Saturday.

Yes, It used to work before the rear wheel bearings were replaced.

I have a 99 Forester, the ABS is not working. The abs light does not come on when the ignition is on, {car not running} nor does it come on when the car is running. According to the manual this indicates an abs problem. What could the problem be?????

On a 99 Forester is the Emergency brake in any way connected to the abs system. I local mechanic told me the rear brake shoes, not the brake pads/caliper are part of the abs. This makes no sense, since the emergency brake is a cable. I was told that the solinoid or abs sensor in the rear shorted out and that until it is replaced the emergency brake can't be connected. This all began a few weeks ago when I had the rear wheel bearings replaced. The mechanic forgot to hook up the emergency brake cable. Meanwhile the abs sensor got wet and shorted out. I am being told they can't hook up the cable until the abs sensor is replaced which they had to order. Does this make any sense????

I would not recomend buying a Forester. I have a 99 with 85,000 miles. I have replaced: The rear wheel bearings, Knock sensor Both head gaskets Air intake sensor Master cylinder Currently has a leaky inner seal in the transmission. Because of a design flaw in the engine I have to add an aditive to the antifreeze everytime I change it to prevent the Head Gasgets from leaking again. This is the most unreliable car I have ever had.

I think it is ridiculous that a car that is suposed to be so reliable has had so many repairs before 100,000 miles. I have spent $1000.00 on repairs. Yes, many of the repairs were recalls, but my time spent taking it in for repairs is worth something. I have a Cougar with 174,000 miles that has been much more reliable! I don't think I will buy another Subaru.

Is my Forrester a lemon or is this typical for a Subaru?

I have a 99 Forrester with 86,000 Miles on it. Subaru says change the timing belt at 90,000. Is this necessary???? Also, should I change the water pump at the same time???? Thanks

I recently replaced the rear pads on my 99 Forrester but not the rotors. The rotors are pitted and rusted so badly that I get alot of noise when breaking. Now I would like to replace them. How will this affect the new pads that have a few hundred miles on them? Should I replace the pads again?

Is is worth the extra cost to by Subaru parts instead of Napa. I need brake pads and rotors for a 99 Forrester. My Subaru dealer lists pads for $87 and each rotor at $90. Thanks
