  1. I ran out to the garage and looked at the exhaust ports. It's dual port. Maybe I have the year wrong?

It came out of a second gen legacy auto. The wiring harness connector on the passenger rear side of the motor is completely different than what is in my car. So I thought that is was an OBD2 car. Any ideas what I'm looking at? I can post pics if it will help

I guess the good news is that I'll should only have to swap the intake manifold/harness.

  2. on my way home from school today I tried pushing the shifter as far to the left as I could repeatedly and then tried pulling it down into second and it worked! 3rd gear no longer grinds either.

But, by the time I got home it was grinding going into 2nd. Is there a way to adjust the linkage? When I was inspecting it yesterday I saw it was a single rod that rotates for the left right motion at the stick and goes forward and back for the same direction at the stick.

  3. With highway driving I get 21-23 mpg, I think I got 24 one time and I calculate my MPG EVERY TANK because I don't trust the gas gauge. With 4.11 gears you aren't going to get great mileage.
this is with an outback lift, roof rack and the tallest/widest tires I can fit under the car. My GPS says my Odometer is pretty accurate now that I have big tires on it. It was probably off by 10% with the older stock sized tires.

You also have to take the axle type into consideration. EA's and first gen legacys have female splines on the CV cups that go onto axle stubs sticking out of the diff.

Second gen legacys and newer have male splines on the axle that plug into the side of the diff. You can swap CV cups on to different axles to remedy that, but it's hit and miss on what fits.

The VLSD's are not very strong to start with, and it takes heat to warm them up and get them to lock up, so you have to spin a wheel for a bit before it really starts acting like a LSD. The clutch type ones are instant, and the harder you launch, the harder the clutches lock the wheels together.

can the differential and axles be swapped as a unit?

Specifically, can I remove my 1990 legacy open diff and axles (stub on diff) and replace it with an LSD diff and axles (stub on axle) from an RS?

Is there an issue with the RS axles in my legacy?

  5. Gary-

You mention swapping phase I and phase II ej 25 blocks- I'm asking about using '99 phase II ej 2.2 heads on a phase I ej 25 block. Do you know if that'll work? I'm just worried about coolant passages lining up properly, bore sizes, etc.

I'd definitely inspect the tensioner and consider piston slap if I had the car to inspect- but I don't, so I'm just running though the worst case scenario (rod knock, needs a block) to see if I'm even interested in looking at the car.

it'll bolt together, it's called a Frankenstein motor. It's pretty well documented on this site and others. It raises compression to give you pretty good low end grunt. A lot of people install re-ground delta cams at the same time to get even more power.

  6. I really don't know which axles will fit what. I know there are some that stick into the diff, others have stubs in the diff that the axle slides onto, but I don't know which years or cars had which setup. I do know that you can not swap stubs from one type to the other because of differences inside the diffs. So you have to get axles that fit the diff, or at least the inner cups. 93-04/05ish? Impreza axles SHOULD be the same as 2nd gen Legacy (95-99) axles, or at least have the same spline on the hub end.

I have the axles that match the rearend. I guess the question is about hub spline and axle length.

  7. So I've searched and I'm sure the answer is out there but I can't find it.

I have a 1990 Legacy with an open 4.11 differential.

Today I picked up a LSD from a 2001 5 speed RS. I believe that makes this rear end a 4.11 VLSD. It has male axle stubs, so I picked those up too.

    • I've read that the VLSD does not need any additive to the rear gear oil. it this correct?

    • Will these RS rear axles bolt into my Legacy?

    • What should I know before swapping in this differential and axles?
