  1. 95 impreza ej18 5mt awd wagon have a stumby rough idle. also kind bouncy on power in the 500-2k rpm range. thinks its the TPS sensor. any thoughts?
  2. going to change the oil in my 95 impreza ej18 5mt. i was pondering changing over to synthetic. car has 160k on it but in the past 5k i did everything to the engine short of splitting the case(rings/bearings) and am willing to pay for good oil. what type/brand of oil have you have good experience with for the engine and tranny? also got some of this to try out: we'll see if it works or not. looks pretty sweet tho.
  3. yup... cheapo brake pads. squeaking is only real bad when first driven in the morning. just gonna live with it and turn my radio up:)
  4. the rotors are basically new. they have less than 5 thousand miles on them.
  5. think i could just take a few thou' of each side in a lathe.... would that be enough to rough them up....? or just hit them with some rough emery cloth?
  6. got new pads/new calipers. cleaned like a madman. break grease on the back of the pads and shoe/strut connection points. purged the front brake lines with new fluid brakes still squeek a bit. what else can i do to stop squeaky brakes:confused:
  7. the whole point of this is a project to learn how to do it myself. i got this engine for $75 and got many parts off of it that i needed so now its time to play. its not never a chore makin chips.
  8. so i have a ej18 sitting on a engine stand and want to take it apart and machine everything. (i am in a machinist program at a tech school) i want to clean all the parts very well before i bring it in..... soooo.... if i got a big tub and mixed some degreaser in with water and let it sit for a while to use that degreasing action would this harm the engine in any way. ie rust and stuff if not properly dried afterward. should i do this before teardown/after teardown, or both? this is a dumb question i know but i feel there is never a dumb question as long as the dumb question stops the dumb mistake.
  9. 95 impreza wagon ej18 5mt awd none of the nobs except for the fan knob work in my impreza. the heat is set around medium and the temp knob doesn't do anything. also the level knob doesn't work either but it is set on defrost. the knob will turn through the different levels but does not switch anything. what is wrong, is there an electric controll unit that is screwed? or is there some linkage i can reach up there and move to put the heat to HOT?
  10. It is also kinda surgy in the lower end of the rpm spectrum. got a multi-meter. can i check if the wires are good also. anyone care to explain the process or atleast tell me what i'm looking for. thanx!
  11. newish plugs. no CEL. it idles perfectly. could anyone explainthe process to check the TPS?
  12. 95 impreza ej18 5mt awd car feels very on/off ish when it comes to accelerating and decelerating. there is no mid point it seems. think the throttle cable is too tight? or any other ideas? thanx in advance.
  13. yes i did spin the tranny and it felt fine. yes i did put oil in it.... NOT that much of a NEWB! looks like some tranny fun for me!
  14. just installed a new clutch 1000 miles ago so the pilot bearing and throwout are new. I guess i should have used new clips!!!!!!!!!. havn't tried to move it but if it moves am i good....? anyone else second the clip theory..... did you have to pull the whole tranny again or could you jimmy your way in there.... looks like another long weekend:mad: GOD DAM IT!
  15. 95 impreza 1.8l 5 speed awd. just installed a new tranny. started her up and a very loud grindingish noise came from the engine bay. detached accesory belt and tried again. same noise. the noise is the same clutch in and out. it is linked to RPM's Took the starter out to see if i could see wear from possible after start engagement....it look fine and the motion of the gear poping into position seemed smooth I'm thinking i somehow crushed the pilot bearing upon install. any thoughts here gentlemen....? or could be that a clip fell off the throuwout bearing? these are my best guesses. someone please tell me i'm wrong.
  16. thanx. could anyone measure the dipstick and the associated marks so i could make a makeshift one.
  17. 95 impreza awd 5 speed 1.8l. my haynes say capacity for the 5 speed trany is 3.7 quarts but also the front diff has 1.3 quarts. whats my fill for the tranny(don't have a tranny dipstick) 3.7 quarts or 5 quarts? was plannin on using 80-90w, this sound about right?
  18. 95 impreza wagon awd 5sp 1.8l What is the proper procedure for bleeding the ps pump after replacement. also, should i totally recharge the whole system, or just add what is needed after install. Also what kind of fluid would you all recommend for the PS? thanx a bunch.
  19. so how long do you think i could drive it before the tranny blew up. I split the case when i did everything. planning on putting a new(to me) trann and swaping it out. What years subi and model tranny will do. where is the diff ratio marked also? -zack
  20. any good tips for the verification. Thinking i'm gonna put it on 4 stands and let it run in the air with s stethascope on the tranny. the noise is stuck in my mind and 98% sure its not exaust shieds. atleast i get to sit and ponder it for a week or two. source a tranny. no biggie.
  21. After reading this thread: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=94774&highlight=transmission+pinion 1995 impreza wagon awd 5-speed 1.8l What i thought was a wheel bearing i'm starting to think is something serious in my tranny. Noise started as a high piched harmonic noise from 60 to 70 mph. when i accelerated or decelerated the noise would go away. car has new tires (balanced), new MW axles. The right front has 2 new wheel bearings in the last 2000 miles. SO, i assumed when this noise first appeared that it was just that, a bad hub. However, driving 70 on the highway to work the other day i start hearing more and more of gear/grinding/bad noise. i pull over and call AAA not wanting to damage my vehicle anymore. get towed home. go to work, come home and start investigating. i take the front right rotor off and feel with tire on. feel just fine. Put her all back together and took her for a drive around the block with my buddies head on the floor listening to the noise. On the drive took a few minutes for noise to start showing up. When it would show up it would sound like loud gear noises coming perceivably from the gear box. Noise is associated with vehicle speed. I'm thinking pinion bearing front diff. I did have this tranny out about 2k ago and put new input shaft bearing and seals, any way that i could have put the diff together wrong. It all seemed to fit back together nicely. just got acl surgery on thursday. and now prolly have to pull a tranny. F my life.
  22. bellingham is located in washington state. actually i don't think its the bearing...... did some intense listening witha buddy and feel like its coming from the center somewhere:eek: It only goes with car speed and not engine rpms. Took the knuckle off it and felt perfect. felt each bearing/axle/hub after a highway drive and all felt the same within reason. noise takes a few to come it but starting to suspect its tranny related. noise does not change turning left or right could low gear oil cause excessive gear noise....? the tranny doesn't leak any oil. i am stumped right now. gonna make a list of everything that spins and go through that one by one. any guesses?
  23. right front wheel bearing went for the second time in a few thousand miles so time to replace the whole assembly. I was wondering what years and models would have a compatible knuckle assembly for my 1995 impreza awd 5 speed 1.8l ALSO, if anyone has a knuckle they want to get rid of i am in the market as of a few hours ago. Bearing condition isn't critical but would like to get one that i can just bolt up and go for atleast a few thousand miles while i buy a press and replace yet again another bearing. As always, thanks for all the sage advice!
  24. yes have been doing reasearch over the web and found 30% was right on the money. I have found some say don't add grease and some say clean it fully and pack to 30%. I have also read that too much grease can cause too much heat which could be a problem. looking at the bearing again it looks filled to about 30% looks like bearing grease. It is whitish clearish. did a bearing a while ago and it came in green grease which i assumed was packing grease. looked over the site here but no real specifics. just did a bearing and it failed within 1k but i'm pretty sure i tighted the axle nuts too tight and did this on the ground. don't want to make this a 3rd times the charm thing.
