You can remove most of the heat shields, but you should be careful, right under the power steering rack. That high heat will roast the p/s fluid and seals. I suggest you make sure that that section is still there, maybe a good worm drive hose clamp to hold it in place.

If you do replace the pump and fluid, you should add a Magnefine in-line filter. The pump makes a lot of contamination and that will shorten the life of your p/s system. check http://www.broncograveyard.com for one of these filters. Also, if your exhaust heat shields were removed, that excessive heat can cause premature failure on the p/s rack seals.

You should also consider upgrading the wires to your lights. the OE wire gauge is small. Upgrading to a 10 gauge wire, will increase the "brightness" of your lights. There are a few options/instructions out there on the web, that most can re-work if you have a little mechanical knowledge.

Once you find the leak, you should consider flushing the p/s system. The leak is usually from contamination generated by the pump. Lots of contamination is the reason most p/s fail. That contamination wears the seals, leaks fluid, increases friction, etc. My local p/s rebuilder uses a Magnefine in-line filter to keep the fluid clean. Check http://www.broncograveyard.com for this filter.

The smaller filter is just that, smaller. If you want clean oil, I would suggest using a MagnaFilter. It spins on in front of your standard oil filter, and uses a magnet to get all the hard metal particles. There are a few places out there on the web, try Broncograveyard.com or usautoparts.com.

to avoid further problems, i suggest you install an in-line filter in the return line. The local p/s rebuilder won't sell a unit with out one. Clean fluid will add years of faithful service. I am using Magnefine. try JC Whitney or Northern Tool. These are inexpensive insurance to avoid future failure. I also put one in my auto trans cooler line!

I'm new to this site, and Subaru's. I have a 90 legacy wagon 4wd, with airbags on all 4 corners. the left front doesn't hold air. I would appreciate some input on my options and suggestions on where to get parts.

you should also replace/add an in-line filter (Magnefine) to your trans cooler line. keeping the fluid clean is really important to keep your car on the road. check for a Magnefine at Northern Tool, or broncograveyard.com.

FYI, if you filter the fluid better, it will last longer and do a better job of keeping the trans and fluid cleaner. Cleaner fluid runs cooler, and you will get more miles out of it. I replaced the big can in my Legacy, (a service fix in the early 90's) with a Magnefine filter, (it goes in the cooler line). I got it at Broncograveyard.com. These filters are used by a lot of the transmission remanufacturers. I'm a big fan of clean fluids!
PS- I also put one in the low pressure line on my power steering.
