  1. Had a tree limb fall on our hood Cracked the hood a bit, but also cracked / split the top of the air filter housing (where the filter is now exposed). I really only need the top half of that housing, found one online for a 1998 Legacy (but doesn't specify if it's from a wagon) but does say 2.2. Would this fit? Does anyone have a clue on that? Are they interchangeable? Thanks in advance! 1999 Subaru Legacy Wagon 2.2
  2. 1999 Subaru Legacy Wagon: Hit a curb slightly while making a tight slow turn, guess the curb was wedged under Driver Front side and when backing up, it pulled the corner off, stripping the bolt holes. This is the wife's car - didn't realize how low to the ground everything is. Her model looks like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Subaru_Legacy_30th.jpg So yeah, looks like the bolt holes are now stripped. The front left is seperated from right in front of the wheel and then a bit wrapping over into the front side. How difficult is it to repair / pop back into place? If I bring it to a small shop, would they be able to create some new holes to secure everything pretty easily? Or do I need to take this to a body shop (gulp). Car has 126k on it so I really don't want to spend a lot and just want it to be secured - then I can put some touch up paint on it. Any advice appreciated!!
  3. Thanks for that. Snowing badly here, considering bringing it into the shop my friend owns. Can anyone give me a rough estimate on what a "decent" cost would parts/labor for 1 O2 sensor parts/labor and the ball joint parts and labor if I have to go into the shop? Thanks!
  4. i have a 1999 Legacy, I believe: 2.2L 2212CC H4 FI VIN: EJ22E I am told I need an 02 sensor and a driver side front ball joint replaced. How do I know which 02 sensor I need? Will the code tell me since I think there are 2 on the car, right? There are a bunch on here and look very different: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/subcategory_oxygen-sensors_16466?isAllVehicle=false&showTitle=&vehicleIdFromReq=41459&vehicleIdSearch=41459 Same thing with the ball joints, I see there are only 3 listed, any recommendations? http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/PartSearchCmd?storeId=10151&catalogId=10051&pageId=partTypeList&suggestion=&actionSrc=Form&langId=-1&searchTerm=ball+joint&vehicleIdSearch=41459&searchedFrom=header Looking to do this myself with a mechanic friend - any ideas on hours of labor to do both of these? Thanks SO MUCH for the help!!!
  5. Hey all - in need of new struts. The front ones are apparently REALLY bad, but going to do all 4 and get them over with. Can someone in the know help me confirm part #'s for Monroe strut assemblies and strut mounts? 1999 Legacy wagon 2.2 There seem to be a million choices (without air suspension, etc). I have ABS if that helps. Trying to order the correct ones w/o issues. There is a sale on Monroe struts near me and I'd like to get them before that goes away. Thanks SO MUCH in advance!
  6. Thanks guys. Yeah, got the parts, I don't fully want to mess with it. Been hearing / feeling some clunking going over bumps etc, and there is definitely play in the wheels - so this seems like a good bet. I appreciate it - just wanted to make sure $100 for labor on this was good to go.
  7. 1999 subaru legacy - How hard are these to do? i got both left and right side inner tie rod parts for $60. Was quoted $100 to install - does that seem "reasonable"? Thanks!
  8. I will check that all. The left side "works" but sounds like crap. The right side is just basically out (I can hear just a little sound).
  9. I have a regular legacy wagon (not OBW). And because the head unit is after market, there is no amp attached to it. I am wondering if there is an external amp somewhere I don't know about and it's blown. Going to check under the seats later tonight. I just don't think this could be a speaker issue. i am thinking there is an amp somewhere, or a messed up ground wire somewhere.
  10. I would agree with this assessment - but that's why I was wondering if there was an amp. The speakers are stock as far as I know. The headunit was aftermarket, but if there is an amp, I have no idea where it is (never seen it). It was my first though (amp) but not sure how to determine if there is an amp somewhere. If it's not a stock amp, then I don't think there is one.
  11. That's a very good idea, though this is a wagon, so the rear speakers are still in the doors. Which is why I am not sure what the hell changed all of a sudden. Really, my wife said it was after she got gas, and things were just crazy after that. Not sure what would have caused that. Definitely NOT the head unit. I don't mind replacing speakers, but seems odd they would have blown. Wire short seems plausable, but not sure even where to start with that. I guess it IS possible there was a blown "right" side and speakers are going haywire, but I really figured this would have been a head unit or amp issue. With no amp in the stock system for the aftermarket head unit to go through, I am lost.
  12. Basically, everything on the left side plays at a low level (cd, aux, am/fm). Right side can barely be heard. When the volume is raised a bit higher, there is distortion on the left side - when raised a bit past that, it leads to a jarring high pitch squeeal that cannot be stopped unless the car is turned off. Keep in mind, this all just happened all of a sudden. No problems for over a year and then this - I am kind of lost.
  13. I agree with you. my point is, that I tried a different head unit today and still had the same issue! So I need to locate the issue cause the problem and go from there. Since it sounds like I don't have a stock amp in the car, I am getting a bit confused as to what it can be. Certainly I can put new speakers on there, but I have a feeling it's not that. Gonna take the speakers out and inspect it next weekend as it sounds like I need to pull the interior of the door off to look at the speakers.
  14. Thanks for the clarification. Because there is this very strange LOUD strange high pitched squeal that happened after I increased the volume on the aux/ipod - I am thinking it's more than speakers, but I will check that all out. Thanks again. Btw, do I need to take off the interior side of the door to replace the speaker?
  15. The issue just happened randomly one day - so the harness should be fine as we hadn't had an issue with it since we have owned the car. When you say "block connector" are you referring to the wiring harness? I guess I can buy a pair of speakers and put em in and see if it's fixed. Btw, the tweeters high up on the doors, what size are those and are they easy to replace?
  16. Well if there is no amp and the Head unit has been swapped with the same issue, any ideas what could be up? Is the speaker wire from the harness going directly to the speaker? Not going through anything else?
  17. My Right front and right rear speakers are a bit off - there is a little bit of sound coming out, but not much. I swapped out the head unit today and experience the same issue. Is there a stock amp somewhere that could be messed up? I mean, with the head unit swapped and the same issue, it's gotta be the speakers or something I can't see. But it's rare that both right speakers would be out (as opposed to both fronts or both rears). Anyone have any ideas?
  18. Got everything apart. Swapped in a different head unit (with a bit of gerryrigging the wiring to utilize the existing wiring harness. Same issue. The Right side is just about out (you can still hear a bit of something coming through). Thus, it's not fully out. When I cranked the sound system, it started distorting again, and then the music cut out and just led to an extremely high pitched squeal that I could not get rid of until I disconnected the head unit completely. So I am pretty perplexed. There is a gremlin in there somewhere - any ideas?? Is there an amp somewhere that may be broken?
  19. I figured as much. Just went out to do that but having issues trying to figure out how to take that center dash trim off. I took off the cup holder and the top part of that trim is loose, but not sure how to get the bottom off. Do I need to take off a bunch of console pieces to get the head unit out?
  20. We have an aftermarket CD player in the subie which was in there when we bought the car about a year ago. Everything has been fine with the sound etc, though about a month ago, my wife said she stopped at a gas station, got gas and when she got back in the car, she said the stereo didn't work and there was a very pronounced buzz coming from the speakers. Later, on the long drive, it started to work but there was some distortion. When I finally got a chance to check it out, seems at low levels, it sounds fine, but at a certain point when raising the volume, it all gets distorted. Not sure what would have caused this and if it was a situation that someone else has come across. I don't have the "key" to pull the stereo out and test another head unit (I have another aftermarket one I could try out to see if it's the head unit or the speakers. Has anyone had this situation before? 1999 Subaru Legacy 75k
  21. Thanks for all that guys, much appreciated. Will be looking into this further. I am fairly certain my baffold (rear seal) IS leaking and dripping down.
  22. It's actually looking like it's leaking from both areas. I the oil pan isn't costing me much to fix so I am just going to get it done. It is very likely the baffle plate which I am anticipating fixing within a few months. Thanks for the post!
